\n CrossFit CEO Greg Glassman apologized for inflammatory Twitter<\/a> posts about George Floyd that outraged the sport\u2019s devotees and killed a big-name corporate partnership.<\/p>\n

Glassman issued the mea culpa for mentioning Floyd \u2014 whose death at the hands of Minneapolis police has spurred nationwide protests \u2014 in tweets slamming lockdowns meant to curb the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s FLOYD-19,\u201d Glassman wrote Saturday in response to a tweet from the University of Washington\u2019s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation calling racism and discrimination \u201ccritical public health issues.\u201d<\/p>\n

The tweet sparked a quick backlash with critics accusing Glassman of racism and saying he made light of Floyd\u2019s killing. Amid the furor, Reebook told Footwear News<\/a> that it would end its partnership with CrossFit HQ and some of the company\u2019s 15,000 affiliates said they were cutting ties.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a Sunday statement posted to CrossFit\u2019s Twitter account, Glassman said he was wrong to use Floyd\u2019s name in expressing his outrage over the economic damage caused by coronavirus lockdowns. He called his remarks \u201cnot racist but a mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFloyd is a hero in the black community and not just a victim,\u201d Glassman said in the statement. \u201cI should have been sensitive to that and wasn\u2019t. I apologize for that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Glassman had elaborated on his initial tweet earlier Sunday by suggesting that restrictions aimed at preventing COVID-19 from spreading were responsible for the civil unrest sparked by Floyd\u2019s death.<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Your failed model quarantined us and now you\u2019re going to model a solution to racism? George Floyd\u2019s brutal murder sparked riots nationally,\u201d Glassman wrote in another reply to the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation. \u201cQuarantine alone is \u2018accompanied in every age and under all political regimes by an undercurrent of suspicion, distrust, and riots.\u2019 Thanks!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

But that didn\u2019t stop some CrossFit champions from condemning Glassman. Canadian athlete Patrick Vellner called his comments \u201cunequivocally wrong and insensitive to a population that is hurting.\u201d<\/p>\n

Three-time women\u2019s champion Tia-Clair Toomey said she was \u201csaddened, disapp<\/a>ointed and frustrated\u201d with Glassman, adding that her future with CrossFit was \u201cunclear.\u201d And 2008 CrossFit Game<\/a>s champion Jason Khalipa said his gym company would end its affiliation with CrossFit after more than a decade.<\/p>\n

\u201cLiving better means nothing while standing by in the face of racism, injustice, and hate,\u201d Khalipa said on Instagram. \u201cWe owe it to our team, members, and the greater community to stand for something better than what we are witnessing.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
