But before he was tried for the grisly crime, the relationship between the producer and his teenage prot\u00e9g\u00e9 was marred by brutality, sick control and twisted love. And it ultimately wound up becoming a chilling harbinger of the violence to come. <\/p>\n<p>Ronnie, the bad-girl vocalist of \u201960s rock group the Ronettes, died Wednesday at 78 following a brief battle with cancer. Still, before his violent temperament would send sparks flying, theirs was a relationship that sparked musical ingenuity.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Redferns<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Phil would help bring Ronnie and the Ronettes chart-topping success with hit tunes from \u201cBe My Baby\u201d and \u201cBaby, I Love You\u201d (both 1963), to \u201cThe Best Part of Breakin\u2019 Up\u201d and \u201cWalking in the Rain\u201d (both 1964). The pair tied the knot in 1968, and the Ronettes called it quits shortly thereafter.<\/p>\n<p>Ronnie\u2019s reps didn\u2019t respond to The Post\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"682\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/01\/ronnie-spector-511.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=682\" alt=\"ronnie Spector \" class=\"wp-image-20815780\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/01\/ronnie-spector-511.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1023 1023w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/01\/ronnie-spector-511.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=682 682w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/01\/ronnie-spector-511.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=341 341w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/01\/ronnie-spector-511.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 682px) 100vw, 682px\"\/><figcaption>Phil and Ronnie Spector in Westwood, California, in 1972.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In Ronnie\u2019s 1990 memoir \u201cBe My Baby: How I Survived Mascara, Miniskirts, and Madness,\u201d she wrote that, while she admired her ex-husband\u2019s musical genius, he was vindictive, controlling and violent. <\/p>\n<p>In the book, she also mentions that he actually kept a gold coffin in their basement and told her he would kill her if she tried to leave him. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI can only say that when I left in the early \u201970s, I knew that if I didn\u2019t leave at that time, I was going to die there,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The book further details how Phil kept her locked away in his California mansion, where he subjected her to harsh psychological abuse. In 1972, with the help of her mother, she made a run for it, barefoot, and barely escaped with her life.<\/p>\n<p>Ronnie told <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/music\/ronnie-spector-ex-phil-spector-twins\/\">People<\/a> in 2018 about her mom\u2019s aid and her ordeal: \u201cShe said, \u2018I\u2019m your mother and I\u2019m telling you, we gotta get out of here. Now I feel free now to be able to tell other women. Maybe not every woman will listen to me, but some will and I [hope] I can get one or two to save their [own] lives or save them from getting abused.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As a result of their 1974 separation, Phil got custody of their three <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2018\/11\/28\/ronnie-spector-says-phil-spector-adopted-twins-without-telling-her\/?_ga=2.81867606.1979773144.1641987507-1091462830.1640952382\">adopted<\/a> kids \u2014 Dont\u00e9 Phillip and twins Louis and Gary. He led a campaign in 2007 to bar her from being <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rockhall.com\/inductees\/ronettes\">inducted into the Rock &amp; Roll Hall of Fame.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019d think he might have focused on his murder trial,\u201d the singer told The Post at the time.<\/p>\n<p>The couple\u2019s three adopted children also reportedly suffered abuse and trauma from the producer behind the Wall of Sound recording technique. He was in complete control, directing everyone. So much to love about those days,\u201d she continued. \u201cMeeting him and falling in love was like a fairytale. The magical music we were able to make together, was inspired by our love. I loved him madly, and gave my heart and soul to him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In perhaps the understatement of the century, Ronnie added that, although her ex was \u201ca brilliant producer,\u201d he was \u201ca lousy husband.\u201d She appeared to be at peace with the role he played in her career.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately Phil was not able to live and function outside of the recording studio. Darkness set in, many lives were damaged. I still smile whenever I hear the music we made together, and always will.
