Credit: Idaho National Laboratory<br \/>\n            <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>It&#8217;s taken almost 10 years\u00a0to\u00a0design and construct,\u00a0but researchers at the U.S. Department of Energy&#8217;s Idaho National Laboratory\u00a0have\u00a0now\u00a0energized and put into service one of the nation&#8217;s most comprehensive electric power grid test beds.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>                                                                                With investments\u00a0totaling\u00a0nearly $40 million, the\u00a0test grid\u00a0has been\u00a0outfitted with modern equipment,\u00a0flexible\u00a0infrastructure and\u00a0advanced\u00a0transmission and distribution\u00a0capabilities\u00a0representative of\u00a0much of\u00a0the nation&#8217;s power infrastructure.\u00a0The\u00a0full-scale\u00a0test\u00a0grid\u00a0allows\u00a0experts from across the federal government and private industry to develop and demonstrate\u00a0technologies that\u00a0improve\u00a0security and\u00a0enhance\u00a0resiliency.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Located\u00a0across the\u00a0INL\u00a0Site, the\u00a0test grid\u00a0is rated\u00a0up to\u00a0138 kilovolts. It\u00a0includes up to 32\u00a0miles of reconfigurable\u00a0distribution\u00a0line,\u00a016 miles of transmission line,\u00a0full\u00a0fiber-optic communications\u00a0and transformers capable of supporting demonstrations at 15, 25 and 35 kilovolts.\u00a0Dotting the grid are four\u00a02,500-square-foot\u00a0research\u00a0pads\u00a0designed\u00a0to house large pieces of equipment for conducting power load testing, smart grid\u00a0assessments\u00a0and energy storage experiments.\u00a0The entire system is operated\u00a0from a new, on-site\u00a0command center\u00a0featuring\u00a0up-to-date control systems and real-time power management equipment\u00a0that allow\u00a0sections of the\u00a0test\u00a0grid\u00a0to\u00a0be isolated for specific high-risk\u00a0demonstrations.\u00a0An additional\u00a040,000-square-foot\u00a0test pad and equipment storage building\u00a0will\u00a0be completed\u00a0in 2022.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-gallery lightGallery\">\n<div data-thumb=\"https:\/\/scx1.b-cdn.net\/csz\/news\/tmb\/2022\/idaho-researchers-unve-1.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/scx2.b-cdn.net\/gfx\/news\/2022\/idaho-researchers-unve-1.jpg\" data-sub-html=\"Idaho National Laboratory researchers conducted a full-scale cybersecurity experiment involving a mobile substation and a series of protective relays connected to the lab's power grid test bed. Hoffman,\u00a0acting assistant secretary\u00a0of DOE&#8217;s Office of Electricity. &#8220;Optimized to represent the wide range of distribution system configurations found across the country, the newly energized grid test bed at INL enables greater flexibility in assessing new ideas and technologies to better advance innovation to protect the nation&#8217;s critical electric infrastructure. The enhanced test bed offers a collaborative environment for labs, industry, academia and the government to leverage shared resources and will be used to demonstrate cutting-edge technologies for vital advancements like distributed energy resources and grid-scale energy storage.&#8221;\u00a0<br \/>\n                                            <!-- Google middle Adsense block --><\/p>\n<p>Recognizing the importance\u00a0of\u00a0reliable electric power\u00a0to the nation, along with the threats\u00a0posed by advanced cyberattacks,\u00a0the effects of\u00a0climate change\u00a0and atmospheric\u00a0disruptions\u00a0like solar flares\u00a0and geomagnetic\u00a0phenomenon,\u00a0INL officials\u00a0outlined\u00a0plans\u00a0to\u00a0build the test\u00a0grid\u00a0in\u00a02013. With support from\u00a0Rep.\u00a0Mike Simpson\u00a0of Idaho\u00a0and DOE&#8217;s Office of Electricity,\u00a0initial\u00a0funding to upgrade the grid arrived\u00a0the following year. Subsequent funding followed for the next\u00a0five\u00a0years,\u00a0culminating with the construction and energizing of\u00a0the\u00a0capstone\u00a0transmission line.
