Possibly.<\/p>\n<p>The report reveals that NASA\u2019s astronaut corps has shrunk from nearly 150 people to just 44. As the agency prepares to send humans to the Moon and Mars, officials are concerned that this cadre is too small.<\/p>\n<p>These concerns have been bubbling for some time. I\u2019ve also been forensically analyzing NASA\u2019s astronaut requirements to give you a chance of joining me.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_changing_role\"><\/span>A changing role<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>NASA\u2019s job requirements have been changed drastically since the first astronauts were recruited in 1959.<\/p>\n<p>That could be to your advantage. They also had to be under 40-years-old, in excellent physical condition, and <span>shorter than 5-foot-11.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This left a pool of just 108 men from the Air Force, Navy, and Marines. A range of examinations then whittled that down to a final seven.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s recruits have been spared some of these demands. But they also have to fulfill some new ones.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_application_process\"><\/span>The application process<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The<span>\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/press-release\/nasa-selects-new-astronaut-recruits-to-train-for-future-missions\">2021 recruits<\/a> \u2014 the first new class in four years \u2014 had to be US<\/span> citizens.<\/p>\n<p>If, like me, you\u2019re a dirty foreigner, you could have taken <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stilt.com\/blog\/2020\/06\/what-are-the-four-ways-to-become-a-u-s-citizen\/\">various paths to citizenship<\/a>. This being America, the quickest route was <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/investing\/globe-wealth\/article-yes-you-can-buy-your-way-into-us-citizenship\/\">becoming filthy rich<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The candidates also needed a master\u2019s degree in a STEM-related field or one of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Two years of work toward a doctoral program in a related <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a>, engineering, or math field<\/li>\n<li>A completed Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree<\/li>\n<li>Completion (or enrollment that would result in completion by June 2021) of a nationally recognized test pilot school program<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Flying experience, however, was no longer essential. Applicants also had to be free of medical conditions that could cause issues in spaceflight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a long list of requirements, but <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.upi.com\/news\/European-Space-Agency-ESA-NASA-disabled-astronaut4781621613708\/\">NASA plans<\/a> to broaden the pool of future talent.\n<\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"I_believe_I_can_fly\"><\/span>I believe I can fly<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The class of 2021 was chosen from a field of more than 12,000 applicants.<\/p>\n<p>The 10 recruits range in age from 32 to 45. Every candidate possesses enviable academic qualifications, although all of them are stereotypical space nerds.<\/p>\n<p>While the crop includes Air Force majors and NASA aerospace engineers, some of them are merely brilliant scientists.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m hoping NASA drops the entry standards for the next class. With crewed missions to Mars on the horizon, space wars brewing, and Elon Musk planning to make us an interplanetary species, there\u2019s never been a better time to become an astronaut.<\/p>\n<p>I look forward to toasting our future <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>s through space.
