By the end of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell\u2019s answering speech on Wednesday you knew some new break point had occurred, that President Biden might have thought he was just crooning to part of his base but the repercussions were greater than that; he was breaking in some new way with others \u2014 and didn\u2019t know it. It is poor political practice when you fail to guess the effects of your actions. He meant to mollify an important constituency but instead he filled his opponents with honest indignation and, I suspect, encouraged in that fractured group some new unity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The speech itself was aggressive, intemperate, not only offensive but meant to offend. Presidents more than others in politics have to maintain an even strain, as astronauts used to say. If a president is rhetorically manipulative and divisive on a voting-rights bill it undercuts what he\u2019s trying to establish the next day on COVID and the economy. The over-the-top language of the speech made him seem more emotional, less competent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The portentousness \u2014 \u201cIn our lives and . . . the life of our nation, there are moments so stark that they divide all that came before them from everything that followed. They stop time\u201d \u2014 made him appear incapable of understanding how the majority of Americans understand our own nation\u2019s history and the vast array of its challenges.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>By the end he looked like a man operating apart from the American conversation, not at its center. This can be fatal to a presidency.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%98Gasoline_on_the_fire\"><\/span>\u2018Gasoline on the fire\u2019\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>He was hardly done speaking when a new Quinnipiac poll <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/poll.qu.edu\/poll-release?releaseid=3831\">showed the usual low Biden numbers<\/a>, but, most pertinently, that 49% of respondents say he is doing more to divide the country, and only 42% see him as unifying it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the speech Biden claimed he stands against \u201cthe forces in America that value power over principle.\u201d Last year Georgia elected two Democratic senators. \u201cAnd what\u2019s been the reaction of Republicans in Georgia? Choose the wrong way, the undemocratic way. To them, too many people voting in a democracy is a problem.\u201d They want to \u201csuppress the right to vote.\u201d They want to \u201csubvert the election.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is \u201cJim Crow 2.0,\u201d it\u2019s \u201cinsidious,\u201d it\u2019s \u201cthe kind of power you see in totalitarian states, not in democracies.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The problem is greater than Georgia. \u201cThe United States Senate . . . has been rendered a shell of its former self.\u201d Its rules must be changed. \u201cThe filibuster is not used by Republicans to bring the Senate together but to pull it further apart. The filibuster has been weaponized and abused.\u201d Senators will now \u201cdeclare where they stand, not just for the moment, but for the ages.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/01\/biden-atlanta-1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"From left, Rev. Yes or no? . . . Do you want to be on the side of Dr. King or George Wallace? Do you want to be on the side of John Lewis or Bull Connor? Do you want to be on the side of Abraham Lincoln or Jefferson Davis?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If a speech can be full of itself this speech was.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>From the floor of the Senate the next day came McConnell\u2019s rebuke. It was stinging, indignant to the point of seething. He didn\u2019t attempt to scale any rhetorical heights. The plainness of his language was ferocious.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Biden\u2019s speech was \u201cprofoundly unpresidential,\u201d \u201cdeliberately divisive\u201d and \u201cdesigned to pull our country further apart.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have known, liked and personally respected Joe Biden for many years. I did not recognize the man at the podium yesterday.\u201d Biden had entered office calling on Americans to stop the shouting and lower the temperature. \u201cYesterday, he called millions of Americans his domestic \u2018enemies.\u2019 \u201d That, a week after he \u201cgave a January 6th lecture about not stoking political violence.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwelve months ago, this president said that \u2018disagreement must not lead to disunion.\u2019 But yesterday, he invoked the bloody disunion of the Civil War to demonize Americans who disagree with him. Yesterday he poured a giant can of gasoline on that fire.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn less than a year, \u2018restoring the soul of America\u2019 has become: Agree with me, or you\u2019re a bigot.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis inflammatory rhetoric was not an attempt to persuade skeptical Democratic or Republican senators. In fact, you could not invent a better advertisement for the legislative filibuster than a president abandoning rational persuasion for pure demagoguery.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>American voters, said McConnell, \u201cdid not give President Biden a mandate for very much.\u201d They didn\u2019t give him big majorities in Congress. But they did arguably give him a mandate to bridge a divided country. \u201cIt is the one job citizens actually hired him to do.\u201d He has failed to do it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Talking_to_himself\"><\/span>Talking to himself\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Then McConnell looked at Biden\u2019s specific claims regarding state voting laws. \u201cThe sitting president of the United States of America compared American states to \u2018totalitarian states.\u2019 He said our country will be an \u2018autocracy\u2019 if he does not get his way.\u201d The world has now seen an American president \u201cpropagandize against his own country to a degree that would have made Pravda blush.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe trampled through some of the most sensitive and sacred parts of our nation\u2019s past. He invoked times when activists bled, and when soldiers died. It won\u2019t be good for Joe Biden.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When national Democrats talk to the country they always seem to be talking to themselves. They are of the left, as is their constituency, which wins the popular vote in presidential elections; the mainstream <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> through which they send their messages is of the left; the academics, historians and professionals they consult are of the left. They get in the habit of talking to themselves, in their language, in a single, looped conversation. They have no idea how they sound to the non-left, so they have no idea when they are damaging themselves.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But this week in Georgia Biden damaged himself.
