Brown pointed out that DeGeneres has a \u201chistory of cultural insensitivity\u201d that includes the times she dressed up as Nicki Minaj and Sofia Vergara.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"October_2019_DeGeneres_hangs_out_with_George_W_Bush\"><\/span>October 2019: DeGeneres hangs out with George W. Critics lambasted the comedian for bonding with a president known for his opposition to same-sex marriage, his response to the Hurricane Katrina disaster, and his involvement in the Iraq War. On her show, DeGeneres tried to defend the outing, saying, \u201cWhen I say be kind to one another, I don\u2019t mean be kind to the people who think the same way you do. One photo, however, included DeGeneres posting with more than a dozen children, giving rise to \u201cpoverty porn\u201d allegations. \u201cThis is a misfire. Eventually, a producer on the show backed Johnson up, and DeGeneres admitted she had a \u201cthing\u201d that night, and the Internet seemed to side with the actress, too.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"March_2020_Twitter_users_respond_to_thread_about_DeGeneres_behavior\"><\/span>March 2020: Twitter users respond to thread about DeGeneres\u2019 behavior<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Writing that DeGeneres is \u201cnotoriously one of the meanest people alive,\u201d comedian Kevin T. Porter started a Twitter thread in March 2020 in which he offered to donate $2 to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank for every story of the talk show host being mean. The thread received more than 2,000 replies, including tales of DeGeneres allegedly getting a waitress in trouble for chipped nail polish, shutting down a birthday party over the aroma of grilled steak, and picking a random staff member to \u201creally hate\u201d each day.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"April_2020_DeGeneres_likens_quarantine_to_prison\"><\/span>April 2020: DeGeneres likens quarantine to prison<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><iframe allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WGsxF9pPCRQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"281\" title=\"Ellen DeGeneres' Prison Joke Backlash\" width=\"500\"><\/iframe><br \/>\nIn April, DeGeneres filmed an episode of her talk show at home and compared COVID-19 quarantine to prison. \u201cOne thing that I\u2019ve learned from being in quarantine is that people\u2014this is like being in jail, is what it is,\u201d she said. Viewers took notice. \u201cGuess her designer clothes are her jumpsuit,\u201d one tweeted. \u201cPoor Ellen got quarantined in a jail worth $24 million,\u201d another wrote. A third Twitter user wrote, \u201cPeople are literally dying in jail from COVID-19 while Ellen is out here making jokes about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"April_2020_Variety_reports_on_%E2%80%9Cfurious%E2%80%9D_%E2%80%98Ellen_staffers\"><\/span>April 2020: <em>Variety<\/em> reports on \u201cfurious\u201d \u2018Ellen\u2019 staffers<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>DeGeneres told <em>Ellen<\/em> viewers that she resumed her talk show from home to \u201csupport\u201d her staff and crew. But later in April, <em>Variety<\/em> reported that the core stage crew, more than 30 employees, was \u201cfurious\u201d to received no written communication about their working hours and pay or written inquiries about their health from <em>Ellen<\/em> producers in over a month, and that they were \u201cfurther incensed\u201d that the show hired an outside non-union company to handle the remotely-filmed episodes.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"July_2020_BuzzFeed_News_reports_on_toxic_work_culture_sexual_harassment_allegations\"><\/span>July 2020: <em>BuzzFeed News<\/em> reports on toxic work culture, sexual harassment allegations<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><iframe allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/imbBq9ZRRGU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"281\" title=\"BuzzFeed News probe reveals accusations of \"sexual misconduct and harassment\" at \"Ellen\" show\" width=\"500\"><\/iframe><br \/>\nIn July 2020, after speaking to former and current <em>Ellen DeGeneres Show<\/em>, employees, <em>BuzzFeed <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a><\/em> ran a story about the \u201cracism, fear, and intimidation\u201d the workers said they experienced in the show\u2019s \u201ctoxic\u201d workplace culture. The story prompted a WarnerMedia investigation and an apology from executive producers Ed Glavin, Mary Connelly, and Andy Lassner\u2014who said, in part, that they were \u201ctruly heartbroken and sorry to learn that even one person in our production family has had a negative experience\u201d and were \u201ccommitted to do better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Two weeks later, <em>BuzzFeed News<\/em> reported on ex-employees\u2019 accusations of on-set sexual harassment and misconduct, including an allegation that head writer Kevin Leman asked one employee to perform oral sex on him. In a subsequent statement, Leman denied \u201cany kind of sexual impropriety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The two pieces seem to put blame more on the executive producers than on DeGeneres, but one former employee told the site that the host \u201cknows s\u2014t goes on, but also she doesn\u2019t want to hear it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DeGeneres addressed the alleged workplace misconduct in a staff letter obtained by <em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>, saying, in part, \u201cAs we\u2019ve grown exponentially, I\u2019ve not been able to stay on top of everything and relied on others to do their jobs as they knew I\u2019d want them done. Clearly some didn\u2019t.
