data-save-publication=\"false\">\n        <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>       Personal-computer shipments hit their highest annual levels in nearly a decade as the COVID-19 pandemic forced workers and students to stay home in 2021, according to reports from research firms.<\/p>\n<p> While global PC shipments rose just 1% to 92.7 million units in the holiday quarter, the year ended with a total of 348.8 million units shipped, according to a report Wednesday from International Data Group. That\u2019s the highest annual total since 2012, said IDC, for a gain of 14.8% from 2020, when PCs began flying off shelves as COVID-19 pushed more work, education and commerce online. <\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       Before the pandemic, PC sales had been in a years-long decline as consumers focused on replacing their smartphones more regularly than their laptops.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For more: The pandemic has brought the personal computer back to life, with help from Zoom<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cConsumer need for PCs in emerging markets and global commercial demand remained strong during the quarter with supply being a gating factor,\u201d Jitesh Ubrani, research manager for IDC\u2019s Mobile Device Trackers, said in a statement. \u201cWhile consumer and educational demand has tapered in some developed markets, we continue to believe the overall PC market has reset at a much higher level than before the pandemic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rival Gartner reported a slightly smaller annual total of 339.8 million units shipped on 10% growth Wednesday, and said that worldwide PC shipments declined 5% in the fourth quarter to 88.4 million.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fourth quarter\u2019s decline only slightly tempered the PC market\u2019s growth in 2021, which saw the highest shipment volume since 2013,\u201d Mikako Kitagawa, research director at Gartner, said in a prepared statement. \u201cDuring the pandemic, shipment growth has been supported by an average selling price (ASP) hike, resulting in higher revenues and a healthier market overall. As a result, annual PC shipment volumes are not expected to decline to pre-pandemic levels for at least 2-3 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Back in October, Gartner announced a major change in how it reported its shipment figures by including Chromebooks in their tally, as the popular low-cost laptops boomed in popularity with remote schooling. Previously, Gartner did not factor Chromebooks \u2014 PCs that run on Alphabet Inc.\u2019s\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\n        GOOG,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205453964\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.47%<\/bg-quote><\/p>\n<p>        GOOGL,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/202490156\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.64%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       Google Chrome operating system \u2014 into their figures, which created a wide gulf between the two research firms\u2019 figures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA sharp decline in the U.S. PC market, caused by ongoing supply chain issues and the collapse in demand for Chromebooks, drove this quarter\u2019s slowdown,\u201d said Kitagawa. \u201cThis likely signifies the end of the massive and unexpected growth in PC demand triggered by the pandemic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>PC makers struggled to find the necessary components to make their products at times in 2021, which hampered their ability to manufacture and ship product. Specifically, semiconductors were in short supply globally, and Intel Corp.<br \/>\n        INTC,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203649727\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+1.38%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       struggled to produce enough chips for PCs at times in recent years while also suffering in next-generation manufacturing. <\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>In-depth: The semiconductor shortage is here to stay, but it will affect chip companies differently<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cA challenging logistical environment, coupled with ongoing supply-side shortages, meant that the PC market could have been even larger than it was in 2021,\u201d said Tom Mainelli, head of IDC\u2019s device and consumer research.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe closed the year with many buyers still waiting for their PC orders to ship,\u201d Mainelli said. \u201cAs we move through the first half of the year, we expect supply to remain constrained, especially with regards to the commercial segment where demand is the most robust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t miss: The tiny, $1 chip that is behind record price increases for computers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>China\u2019s Lenovo Group Ltd.<br \/>\n        992,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205368244\/delayed\" class=\"\"><\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       was the largest manufacturer of the year, according to IDC tabulations, with shipments rising 14.1% to 81.9 million, ahead of HP Inc.<br \/>\n        HPQ,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203461582\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.72%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       which increased shipments 9.3% to 74.1 million while facing some of the biggest issues in the industry with obtaining components. Dell Technologies Inc.\u2019s<br \/>\n        DELL,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203822527\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.60%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       shipments rose 17.9% to 59.3 million, while <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a>le Inc.\u2019s<br \/>\n        AAPL,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/202934861\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.51%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       gained 22.1% to 27.8 million and Acer Inc.\u2019s<br \/>\n        2353,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205835580\/delayed\" class=\"negative\">-0.82%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       rose 16.5% to 23.9 million.<\/p>\n<p>Gartner had similar figures, though there was a disparity with totals from Lenovo and Apple.
