\n A collective known as Spice DAO spent \u20ac2.66M ($3.04M) on a copy of Alejandro Jodorowsky\u2019s Dune<\/em> book. The problem is they want to turn the book into an animated show:<\/p>\n

We won the auction for \u20ac2.66M. Now our mission is to:<\/p>\n

1. Make the book public (to the extent permitted by law)<\/p>\n

2. Produce an original animated limited series<\/a> inspired by the book and sell it to a streaming service<\/p>\n

Honestly, I \u2014 and many others<\/a> \u2014 are flabbergasted. It app<\/a>ears Spice DAO has confused owning a copy of Jodorowsky\u2019s Dune<\/em> with having any sort of say over the copyright of said material.<\/p>\n

This is akin to me saying I have a rare Jar Jar Binks toy (true), which means I can start shooting my own version of Star Wars<\/em> with him as the main character (false).<\/p>\n

The auction in question closed on November 22, 2021. It was\u00a0handled by Christie\u2019s<\/a> and we can confirm that, yes, the book did sell for \u20ac2.66 million. The estimate for the lot was between \u20ac25 thousand and \u20ac35 thousand. This means Spice DAO paid roughly between 76 and 100 times the asking price.<\/p>\n
