What\u2019s the difference? Are brushless motors worth the extra money? It isn\u2019t just the carbon brush that differentiates brushless and brushed motors. Both harness the power of an electromagnetic field to turn the shaft. But they go about generating that field using different methods. Brushed motors do it mechanically, while brushless motors do it electronically.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_Brushed_Motors_Work\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_1\">How Brushed Motors Work<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>It\u2019s essential to understand what a brush is in the context of power tool motors. Brushes are simply small blocks of metal, usually carbon, mounted against a motor\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linquip.com\/blog\/commutator-motors\/\">commutator<\/a>. They don\u2019t have bristles, they\u2019re fixed in place, and they don\u2019t clean anything. The brush\u2019s only job in the motor is to deliver electric current to the commutator. The commutator then energizes the motor\u2019s coils in an alternating pattern to generate an electromagnetic field that turns the motor shaft. The commutator and brushes setup has been around for decades, and you\u2019ll still find them in powerful drills, rotary tools, and more.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_Brushless_Motors_Work\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_2\">How Brushless Motors Work<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Brushless technology does away with both brushes and commutators. Instead, they employ a ring of permanent magnets around the motor coils. The electromagnetic field spins the permanent magnets when the coils are energized, turning the shaft. These types of motors use a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.motioncontroltips.com\/faq-what-are-hall-effect-sensors-and-what-is-their-role-in-dc-motors\/\">Hall effect sensor<\/a> to\u00a0constantly monitor the position of the rotor and energize each motor coil exactly when needed to sustain the stability and speed of the spin.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whats_the_Advantage_of_Brushless_Motors\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_3\">What\u2019s the Advantage of Brushless Motors?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Doing away with components that require physical contact to deliver electricity makes brushless motors superior to their brushed counterparts in many ways. Including increased energy efficiency, improved responsiveness, greater power, torque, and speed, less maintenance, and a longer overall lifespan for the tool.<\/p>\n<p>But how do those advantages manifest themselves in regular use? To get some expert answers, I sat down with Vincent Ferrari. He\u2019s the owner of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vincentmferrari.com\">Handmade by Vincent Ferrari<\/a>, a boutique woodworking store, and host of <em><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.becausewemake.com\">Because We Make<\/a><\/em>, one of the premier podcasts in the maker space. According to him, \u201cthe benefit of brushless motors isn\u2019t so much that they don\u2019t have that consumable part, it\u2019s just that they work better, they generally work better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He explained that the most significant area you notice is in battery life. \u201cBattery life is significantly better on a brushless tool.\u201d said Ferrari, \u201cI actually had this cordless circular saw from Ryobi, the original brushed version. As soon as they came out with the brushless version, I upgraded. The battery life with the exact same batteries, I would say it\u2019s easily doubled, if not more.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1920px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-106376\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.reviewgeek.com\/p\/uploads\/2021\/12\/c4c86cfe.jpg\" alt=\"A Ryobi cordless, brushless, circular saw sitting on a workshop table\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"imagecredit\">Vincent Ferrari<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Other enhancements of brushless tools are the tool\u2019s speed, torque, and control, all of which apply to everything from cordless drill drivers to circular saws. According to Ferrari, since there are fewer moving parts and no friction in a brushless motor, \u201cas soon as you pull the trigger, all the power goes directly to the motor, and you\u2019re immediately up to full speed. You don\u2019t have to kind of ramp up the speed and the torque and stuff. The RPMs are there from the second you pull the trigger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ferrari also noted that brushless motors produce a great deal less noise than their brushed counterparts. \u201cYou\u2019d be surprised how quiet they are.\u201d said Ferrari, \u201cAnd that\u2019s something people that work with tools tend to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nceh\/hearing_loss\/toolkit\/listen_up_tools.html\">not take seriously<\/a> enough. Noise is a consideration when we\u2019re talking about drills. Routers too, they\u2019re loud. Circular saws are really loud tools. If you get a brushless version of a tool, it\u2019s definitely going to be quieter.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1920px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-106377 size-full\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.reviewgeek.com\/p\/uploads\/2021\/12\/230716a6.jpg\" alt=\"A DeWalt brushless, cordless drill sitting on a workshop table\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" data-credittext=\"Vincent Ferrari\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"imagecredit\">Vincent Ferrari<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When asked about <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/301405\/how-to-maintain-all-of-your-tools-so-they-last-almost-forever\/\">tool maintenance<\/a>, Ferrari explained that replacing brushes isn\u2019t something most people ever actually do. \u201cIt\u2019s important to remember that not all brushed tools are user-serviceable.\u201d said Ferrari, \u201cIf you\u2019re mechanically inclined, you can rip them open and replace the brushes. But they\u2019re not really meant to be serviced. They\u2019re meant to be disposable. When the brushes die, they die. Whereas a brushless tool will last you significantly longer, you\u2019ll probably get tired of it before you have a mechanical failure.\u201d You most likely won\u2019t take your power tools apart to fix them, so a longer last brushless drill or saw will help pay for itself.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_are_the_Disadvantages_of_a_Brushless_Motor\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_4\">What are the Disadvantages of a Brushless Motor?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The only downside to power tools with brushless motors is the price tag. Brushless tools cost about 30% more than their brushed counterparts. Every other aspect of a tool\u2019s performance is improved through the use of a brushless motor. I even asked Ferrari to give us any reason why someone should choose a brushed tool over a brushless model \u2014 if the price wasn\u2019t a factor. I would say no.\u201d Ferrari said, \u201cFor someone like me, I use my tools a lot. I make a lot of stuff. I make a lot of stuff for customers. So, for me spending the money makes sense. But for someone who\u2019s gonna grab a bag of tools once a month and use them for 15 to 20 minutes, it\u2019s just not worth it.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Where_to_Buy_Brushless_Tools\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_6\">Where to Buy Brushless Tools<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>https:\/\/www.shutterstock.com\/image-photo\/minsk-belarus-april-6-2018-department-1082126852<\/p>\n<p>My last question for Ferrari was which tool companies make brushless tools. He said, \u201cAll of your big box store brands do but not in their complete lines. So, when it comes to the big brand names like DeWalt, Makita, and Ryobi, there are certain tools that are going to be brushless and certain that are going to be brushed, and that\u2019s just the way it is. So, all the big names have some brushless tools; it\u2019s just a matter of which tools.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Bottom_Line\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_7\">Bottom Line<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Power tools with brushless motors offer increased value and utility in nearly every area compared to their brushed-motor equivalents. But you\u2019ll pay a hefty premium to get it.
