\n Mayor Bill de Blasio dug in Monday and defended his school reopening plan after critics \u2014 including Andrew Gov. Cuomo \u2014 blasted it as little more than an outline that left gaping questions about the new academic year unanswered.<\/p>\n

State officials required all districts to submit a report detailing their app<\/a>roach to reviving school systems in September amid the coronavirus crisis.<\/p>\n

But the city\u2019s 32-page submission drew poor marks for a lack of specificity and comparatively meager length. One Cuomo official noted that Yonkers \u2013 which has a total of 27,000 kids \u2013 produced a roughly 80-page report.<\/p>\n

Both the city teachers and principals unions argued that the plan fell well short on safety assurances and logistical precision.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis plan has been worked on for months with our union colleagues literally daily,\u201d de Blasio said Monday. \u201cWe provided a very clear roadmap to the state and we\u2019re going to keep providing additional information.\u201d<\/p>\n

The state also requested reopening plans for all of New York City\u2019s roughly 1,800 schools but the the Department of Education requested and was granted an extension.<\/p>\n

De Blasio stressed the size of the nation\u2019s largest school system and insisted that he and the DOE were prepared for the onrushing start of the new year.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a big undertaking,\u201d he said. \u201cBut it\u2019s all about health and safety first.\u201d<\/p>\n

De Blasio denied being bothered by Cuomo\u2019s pointed scolding.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am past the point of irritation,\u201d he said. \u201cI just focus on the work and I\u2019m focused on the people I serve.\u201d<\/p>\n

De Blasio was later asked about ongoing dissatisfaction with the quality of remote learning in city schools.<\/p>\n

Parents griped about a lack of live instruction after the DOE transitioned to distance learning last year and those complaints have persisted during summer school sessions.<\/p>\n

Hizzoner said he hasn\u2019t gotten a \u201cparticularly new update\u201d on the issue before stressing the need for a return to classroom activity.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s no one I\u2019ve talked to in education from the chancellor on down who relishes more online learning,\u201d he said. \u201cWe are trying to maximize online learning for the good of our kids because we know it makes a world of difference. Online is a tool we will use when we need to use it but it\u2019s inherently imperfect.<\/p>\n

De Blasio said the DOE will push to increase direct contact between students and school staff during remote this year but said the format can never replace face to face teaching.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt will never be as good as in person,\u201d said. \u201cThat\u2019s why our plan calls for maximizing in person learning as long as we can do it safely.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
