{"id":397375,"date":"2022-01-21T23:00:53","date_gmt":"2022-01-21T20:00:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/more-glossies-launched-in-2021\/"},"modified":"2022-01-21T23:00:53","modified_gmt":"2022-01-21T20:00:53","slug":"more-glossies-launched-in-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/more-glossies-launched-in-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"#More glossies launched in 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#More glossies launched in 2021<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>COVID lockdowns <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>arently are good for at least one thing: all that extra time to spend flipping through a magazine \u2014 a down-and-out corner of the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> industry that got an unexpected boost last year.<\/p>\n<p>The second year of the pandemic brought a surprisingly sharp rebound in new print magazines, fueled by special interest, niche glossies. And \u2014 perhaps not so surprisingly \u2014 sex mags.<\/p>\n<p>New magazine launches totaled 122, up from 60 that launched in 2020.\u00a0The data comes from Samir Husni, a recently retired professor and founder of University of Mississippi\u2019s Magazine Innovation Center at the School of Journalism and New Media, who bills himself as \u201cMr. Magazine.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf there\u2019s one word that sums up the recent crop of magazines it\u2019s individualism,\u201d said Husni, who has been tracking new US magazine launches since 1978. \u201cMore individuals are finding an escape in print and sort of a validation of what they\u2019re doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new launches are overwhelmingly niche-oriented, with low frequencies \u2014 quarterly or bimonthly, and although they more than doubled from the prior year,\u00a0 they are far from the industry\u2019s last golden era when the internet was in its early days of growth. <\/p>\n<p>For instance, in 2000, there were 333 new launches, and in 2003, there were 454, a year later, in 2004 Husni recorded a record number of new launches, with 473.\u00a0(Even as recently as 2019 there were 139 new launches.)<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/01\/new-magazines-1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"There were 122 new print-magazine launches in 2021, representing a sharp rebound from the 60 that launched last year, and offering hope that print media has a strong \u2014 though admittedly more boutique \u2014 future, according to Samir Husni, perhaps the world\u2019s foremost expert and advocate for ink-on-paper magazines.\" class=\"wp-image-20750591\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/01\/new-magazines-1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1536 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/01\/new-magazines-1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/01\/new-magazines-1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>There were 122 new print-magazine launches in 2021, representing a sharp rebound from the 60 that launched last year, according to Samir Husni, who is known as \u201cMr. Magazine\u201d in the industry.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Samir Husni\/MediaPost<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Somewhat ironically, Husni said the pandemic is \u201chelping\u201d grow niche magazines that cover topics ranging from cannabis, cryptocurrencies and sex to women in business, African-American culture, life in the mountains and fashion.<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, the most launches came from the special interest category with 17 new glossies, followed closely by sex magazines with 14.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Husni said that the resurgence in adult magazines like \u201cJugs\u201d \u2013 not to be confused with the \u201990s nudie mag \u201cJuggs\u201d \u2013 is due in part to the fact that consumers prefer \u201cprivacy.\u201d He explained that adult magazines declined with the rise of online porn, but now, more than ever, consumers are opting to buy print magazines because they are wary of being \u201ctracked\u201d online.<\/p>\n<p>Husni also called out \u201cBitcoin Magazine,\u201d which covers the world of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, as an example of the power of print. He explained that the magazine, which initially launched in 2012, made its return in print after a five-year hiatus in order to give \u201cvalidity\u201d to a currency that isn\u2019t tangible.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"619\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/01\/the-mountains.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"Two covers of The Mountains magazine. Alan Katz, the former publisher of mags like New York, Interview, Vanity Fair and the defunct Cargo, launched \u201cThe Mountains,\u201d an upscale lifestyle glossy targeting people who live in the Catskills and the Berkshires.<\/p>\n<p>The retired professor also gave a nod to the Grazia\u2019s US debut, which was launched by Dylan Howard, the controversial National Enquirer editor turned CEO of Grazia US-parent Pantheon Media, as well as Empire Media and Radar Media Group.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The quarterly fashion magazine stood out to Husni because it launched in the US in September with 356 pages, three separate covers and carrying roughly 80 advertising pages.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Grazia, which carries a $14.99 cover price, uses a closed circulation model, meaning it is distributed directly to 200,000 high-net worth individuals who are responsible for 50 percent of the nation\u2019s wealth and luxury spending, the company said. It\u2019s the exception,\u201d Husni said of the Italian fashion magazine\u2019s US launch. \u201cThe other magazines that launched this year barely have advertising. They are circulation-driven.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But one thing Grazia has in common with those smaller publications is that it is released four times a year, which is a sign of the times, he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an economic issue. Magazine editors now have to be more curators than creators.
