\n Another teachers union group has come out swinging against a return to classrooms in September \u2014 and is calling for the resignation of Chancellor Richard Carranza.<\/p>\n

Citing unresolved health concerns and a general<\/a> lack of preparedness, the United Federation of Teachers\u2019 Solidarity Caucus wants Carranza to step down with the new academic year now weeks away.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Mayor and the Chancellor have consistently failed to provide that leadership and instead, continue to create confusion and chaos despite the urging of government representatives, multiple parent and community groups, the teachers union, and other advocates for public education, to work towards a solution that puts the health and safely of our most vulnerable citizens, our children, above and beyond any political pressure to \u2018reopen\u2019 and ultimately putting ALL at risk for exposure to COVID-19,\u201d the group said.<\/p>\n

The faction issued a petition calling for Carranza to step down that has drawn roughly 400 signatures thus far.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are teachers and parents and have read your plan,\u201d the petition states. \u201cWe still do not feel safe. We should not return to school unless there has been a minimum of 14 days without new cases. Given the fact that schools have had their budgets slashed, we know this will greatly impact their ability to have adequate custodial personnel needed to clean schools during the day and at night. We do not believe that Chancellor Carranza understands this reality.\u201d<\/p>\n

The UFT has pushed back on Mayor Bill de Blasio\u2019s push for a partial reopening of the country\u2019s biggest school system, asserting that the current model does no go far enough in terms of safety or logistical specificity.<\/p>\n

The union has broached the possibility of protests and court action if schools reopen under the current model.<\/p>\n

Another UFT group, the Movement of Rank and File Educators, has also rejected City Hall\u2019s plan and hasn\u2019t ruled out the possibility of a strike as a last resort.<\/p>\n

Several union groups plan to protest against the proposal Monday evening at UFT headquarters.<\/p>\n

In the face of mounting union resistance, de Blasio and Carranza have backed a partial return to city school buildings, citing the need to provide a measure of scheduling relief to parents who can\u2019t work remotely and the inferiority of distance learning compared to on-site instruction.<\/p>\n

But both the principals and teachers unions have resisted that plan thus far, arguing that safety protocols are still inadequate.<\/p>\n

Both MORE and the Solidarity Caucus said school facilities should not reopen until there are no new COVID-19 cases in New York for 14 consecutive days.<\/p>\n

Parental opinion is split on the matter, with some backing a full resumption of classroom instruction, others pushing a remote-only format and some in favor of the current blended model.<\/p>\n

That structure will have students alternating between home and classroom learning.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
