Poor him.<\/p>\n<p>No cop answers a domestic violence call without the heart skipping a beat. Passions rage. Weapons \u2014 usually kitchen tools, but often worse \u2014 flash. Blood flows.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday night in Harlem, it was a gun \u2014 forever the scourge of city streets, but now present in such numbers that nobody is safe, not even that 11-month-old girl shot in the face while sitting in a car seat in The Bronx on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Friday, in the blink of an eye, one young life came to a profoundly unjust end and another is in grave danger. Details were sparse last night, but what comes next is no mystery at all \u2014 bereft survivors; shocked and tearful colleagues; inspectors\u2019 funerals, with the bagpipes and the bunting and the long blue lines of cops from all over the country.<\/p>\n<p>And then, of course, come the recriminations and the finger-pointing. That\u2019s too soon to declare a trend, of course, and not long enough to hang the blame directly on Mr. District Attorney. But there is every reason to blame the city\u2019s rising tide of gun violence on the law-enforcement ethic Bragg so firmly, publicly and defiantly embraces.<\/p>\n<p>It holds that the proper role of the police, and especially the prosecutor, is to soften criminal penalties <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>ly \u2014 and, in particular, to avoid prison sentences whenever possible. And with Bragg all but ordering his staff to ignore misdemeanors and do their best to avoid what he terms \u201ccarceral\u201d outcomes \u2014 prison terms \u2014 the way seems clear for Manhattan\u2019s young gunsels to lay waste wherever and whenever it suits them.<\/p>\n<p>Once upon a time \u2014 before, say, two years ago \u2014 killing a cop was seen as worse than mere murder. But it is all but irrefutable that New York\u2019s political class doesn\u2019t take violent crime \u2014 especially gun crime \u2014 seriously enough to do anything about it.<\/p>\n<p>And the zeitgeist clearly holds police life cheaply \u2014 no matter what the politicians themselves will be saying today.<\/p>\n<p>Not so most New Yorkers. They see the NYPD for what it is \u2014 a rare treasure and a blessing \u2014 and they hold its members to their hearts at times like these.<\/p>\n<p>As they should.
