\n A former top Manhattan prosecutor who resigned amid allegations she played hide-and-seek with key evidence in a major bribery case announced Monday that she\u2019s joining the crowded race for Manhattan District Attorney.<\/p>\n

Diana Florence, the ex-head of Manhattan\u2019s Construction Fraud Task Force, quit Jan. 21 after it came to light she allegedly withheld a damning audio recording and other potentially exonerating material.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve spent my career fighting for people who never thought they\u2019d win and that\u2019s why I\u2019m running for Manhattan District Attorney,\u201d said Florence, who served as a prosecutor for\u00a0 25 years before her untimely exit. \u201cPublic service is about putting people first, not powerful interests.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a jab at her ex-boss, Cyrus Vance Jr., she said, \u201cI\u2019m running for every New Yorker, who, for the past decade, has seen the DA\u2019s office not as a place of opportunity but as an obstacle.\u201d<\/p>\n

Florence is the seventh contender to enter the race. The statement announcing her campaign, first reported by The City, touts her many successes at the helm of the Construction Fraud Task Force while making no mention of the accusation that cost her her job.<\/p>\n

Her alleged failure to promptly turn over evidence led a judge to toss the bribery case against contractor Kyriacos Pierides \u2014 one of several defendants charged with illegally obtaining millions of dollars in city contracts.<\/p>\n

Justice Michael Obus called Florence\u2019s handling of the case \u201ctroubling and inadequate\u201d and said the dismissal of charges was the \u201capp<\/a>ropriate sanction.\u201d<\/p>\n

The trove of evidence that was allegedly turned over more than 18 months late included a 38-minute audio recording of ex-city staffer Ifeanyi \u201cManny\u201d Madu telling officials he \u201cbroke no laws, that he did not take gifts, things of value or bribes from contractors.\u201d<\/p>\n

Madu later took a plea deal and agreed to cooperate, admitting he took cash and tickets to Broadway shows in exchange for feeding confidential information to Pierides and other construction executives.<\/p>\n

Pierides\u2019 lawyers said the recording was evidence of their client\u2019s innocence.<\/p>\n

Despite the troubling allegations against Florence, six labor unions \u2014 including New York State Ironworkers and Bricklayers Local 1 \u2014 are backing her bid, the announcement said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI did make a mistake,\u201d she told The Post. \u201cWhen I learned of it, I took responsibility for it. Accountability is one of the most important traits.\u201d<\/p>\n

The DA didn\u2019t immedia<\/a>tely return a request for comment on whether Florence\u2019s actions had jeopardized other cases.<\/p>\n

Prior to the scandal, the veteran prosecutor had scored significant courtroom victories.<\/p>\n

She won convictions against a site supervisor and a major construction company for the death of Carlos Moncayo, a 22-year-old hardhat who was buried alive in 2015 when a trench he was working in collapsed.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Vance, who has been DA since 2010, still hasn\u2019t decided whether he\u2019ll seek a fourth term in next year\u2019s election, said campaign spokeswoman Anna Durrett.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s focused on continuing to make New York City\u2019s justice system fairer for all New Yorkers, but particularly those who have been historically impacted by our criminal justice system,\u201d Durrett said in a statement.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
