“#Torres Painfully Faces Gibbs Leaving the Team \u2014 and Him (RECAP)<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for NCIS<\/em> Season 19, Episode 12 \u201cFight or Flight.\u201d]<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cLife goes on,\u201d Special Agent Nick Torres (Wilmer Valderrama) says at one point in the latest NCIS<\/em> episode, but that\u2019s easier said than done \u2014 and his actions and words have the rest of the team very<\/em> worried about him.<\/p>\n

After all, when we first see him, he\u2019s a bloody mess in the middle of a cage fight. And 36 hours earlier, he may not be bruised, but he looks like he had a rough night. He was out late with friends, he says; he got a second wind after bailing on Special Agent Jessica Knight (Katrina Law) and forensic scientist Kasie Hines (Diona Reasonover). And that\u2019s after he canceled plans with Special Agent Timothy McGee (Sean Murray) and his wife a week earlier. \u201cWe spend all day together at work,\u201d Torres argues. \u201cDo we have to spend every second of our lives together, too?\u201d Yes, the others tell him.<\/p>\n

Then, he starts wondering if Special Agent Alden Parker (Gary Cole) is looking at Special Agent Dale Sawyer (Zane Holtz) to replace him or Knight after their performance evaluations. \u201cWhatever, I\u2019ve lost a job before,\u201d he says, to Knight\u2019s surprise. \u201cLife goes on.\u201d<\/p>\n

Everyone\u2019s noticing that something\u2019s going on with Torres; as Dr. Jimmy Palmer (Brian Dietzen) voices when McGee and Knight join him, he\u2019s been distanced since Alaska. (Mark Harmon\u2018s Leroy Jethro Gibbs officially left behind NCIS in the fourth episode this season and stayed behind in Alaska after he and McGee wrapp<\/a>ed a case.) It could be a delayed reaction, Knight suggests. They know Torres won\u2019t talk to Dr. Grace, but maybe he\u2019ll open up to Palmer. \u201cPeople have been known to bare their souls to you,\u201d McGee points out.<\/p>\n

Once Parker catches on to Torres \u201cacting \u2026 something,\u201d he turns to the others, who know him better, for advice. McGee suggests trying to get him to talk during a stakeout, so Parker assigns Knight to use her hostage negotiation skills to do just that. Fortunately, the case calls for one, and after starting a game<\/a> of 20 Questions, Knight asks how he\u2019s doing, admitting she\u2019s worried about him.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m fine, just drop it, OK?\u201d Torres tries, but she tells him she\u2019s trying to be a good friend. \u201cWe\u2019re colleagues, we\u2019re not friends. We\u2019re supposed to have each other\u2019s backs on the job, and that is it,\u201d he says. \u201cWhat are you talking about? I\u2019ve only been here for a minute, and I know that\u2019s not how Gibbs\u2019 team works,\u201d Knight protests. \u201cWell, this isn\u2019t Gibbs\u2019 team anymore, is it?\u201d Torres points out, revealing the heart of the problem.<\/p>\n

Even Director Leon Vance (Rocky Carroll) gets a front-row seat to Torres and his new attitude, when he faces off with Sawyer for an undercover op during the case; the victim was killed during an underground cage fighting match, and the two agents are going in to score a meeting with the head of the ring. Things get a bit too heated between the two, including over who\u2019s going to win (\u201cWhy don\u2019t we just stick to the plan, or McGee and I will get in the ring? No one wants to see that,\u201d Parker remarks), and they have to be pulled apart.<\/p>\n

Heading into the fight, Torres scoffs at McGee\u2019s use of \u201cteam,\u201d then refuses to back down when circumstances change. Instead of facing Sawyer, Torres has to go against one of the fighters. \u201cScrew the job,\u201d McGee tells him. \u201cThat\u2019s easy for you to say,\u201d Torres replies. He won\u2019t even back down when it\u2019s looking really<\/em> bad for him during the match, as we saw in the episode\u2019s opening. It looks like he\u2019s trying to get himself killed, McGee says. \u201cYeah, so?\u201d Torres asks. \u201cWho\u2019s left to care?\u201d McGee does. \u201cUntil you don\u2019t,\u201d Torres tells him. \u201cYou already have a family. You don\u2019t need me.\u201d Yes, McGee does, he tells his friend, after the fight is over (and Torres wins).<\/p>\n

At the end of the episode, McGee sends Torres to Palmer to get bandaged up and for that talk \u201cabout why you\u2019re so angry,\u201d the ME tells the agent. \u201cWe all care about you, Nick, but you don\u2019t have to explain yourself to me. I get it. \u2026 You feel abandoned, you feel left behind. Trust me, I do get that.\u201d Torres thinks it\u2019s because he was so close to the old team, but Palmer corrects him: He was angry with his wife, Breena, for dying, \u201ceven though she fought like hell to stay. How crazy is that?\u201d He does talk to Dr. Grace, and their sessions has led Palmer to the conclusion that \u201csometimes people leave. Even fathers. And it\u2019s got nothing to do with you.\u201d<\/p>\n

And so in the aftermath of the closest thing Torres has had to a father, Gibbs, leaving, \u201cthat\u2019s when it\u2019s time to lean on the people that are still here for you. You have to open yourself up to getting hurt again if you ever want to heal,\u201d Palmer says, giving Torres something to think about.<\/p>\n

But this isn\u2019t something that can be forgotten about. Torres could\u2019ve gotten killed in that cage before McGee or anyone else could have put a stop to the fight. And Gibbs isn\u2019t coming back anytime soon, so this team \u2014 Parker, McGee, Torres, and Knight \u2014 is the new normal. Then there\u2019s the Bishop (Emily Wickersham<\/a>) of it; Torres hasn\u2019t really dealt with the fact that she left on an undercover mission just as they seemed to be working something<\/em> out and that doesn\u2019t even come up in this episode. In other words, this should just be the beginning of a multi-episode storyline for Torres, not a one-and-done.<\/p>\n

In other news<\/a>, Vance\u2019s daughter is now old enough to be starting training at FLETC?! He\u2019s keeping it as quiet as possible, but will NCIS<\/em> go on long enough to see her become a junior agent or even just shadow the team during a case?<\/p>\n
