\n ATLANTA \u2014 Mets players aren\u2019t sure what to believe surrounding Yoenis Cespedes\u2019 strange departure from the team other than the fact the veteran outfielder has opted out from the season, citing COVID-19 concerns.<\/p>\n

Brandon Nimmo raised the possibility Monday that team officials actually knew before Sunday\u2019s game<\/a> that Cespedes had opted out. As it was, general<\/a> manager Brodie Van Wagenen issued a statement early in the game saying Cespedes wasn\u2019t at the ballpark and attempts to contact him were unsuccessful. Van Wagenen later said he wasn\u2019t notified by Cespedes\u2019 agent until the eighth inning about the opt-out.<\/p>\n

So from Nimmo\u2019s perspective, it\u2019s not necessarily true that Cespedes jilted his teammates by not showing up at Truist Park.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s two sides of the story,\u201d Nimmo said. \u201cWe have the side where [the Mets] were let known before the game and we\u2019ve also heard the side where they weren\u2019t let known until the eighth inning, so I honestly don\u2019t know which one to believe and I\u2019m not going to try to figure that one out, but as far as us, we knew that people could walk whenever they wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked where the story about the Mets knowing before the game that Cespedes opted out had originated, Nimmo cited \u201csources around the team and rumors.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Mets on Monday doubled down on their version of the story, that Van Wagenen wasn\u2019t aware of the opt-out until he was notified by Cespedes\u2019 agent in the eighth inning. Van Wagenen, a source said, then notified team COO Jeff Wilpon to update the situation. Earlier, the Mets had sent security to Cespedes\u2019 room at the team hotel to check on his safety and found no trace of Cespedes or his belongings.<\/p>\n

The Post reported there had been tension between Cespedes and team officials in the last week over playing time. Cespedes, whose contract was incentive-laden, twice complained to Van Wagenen and manager Luis Rojas about his removal from the starting lineup, according to sources. Rojas, a source said, had been unaware of the incentive structure in the slugger\u2019s contract until Cespedes complained about it last Monday, when he was absent from the starting lineup in Boston.<\/p>\n

Nimmo said he found out during Sunday\u2019s game about Cespedes\u2019 departure from teammate Michael Conforto.<\/p>\n

\u201cI knew [Cespedes] wasn\u2019t in the lineup, but realized that he also wasn\u2019t around,\u201d Nimmo said. \u201cI just asked Mike, \u2018Is Ces gone?\u2019 He said, \u2018Yup,\u2019 and that was the end of the conversation. I wasn\u2019t worried about [Cespedes\u2019] health, because I knew this was a possibility that people could just walk away, so I was pretty sure he was taken care of.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nimmo said he had heard rumors Cespedes might opt out.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut other than that I wasn\u2019t extremely surprised mid-game when I asked Mike, but I was like, \u2018We have got a game to focus on so we just might as well try to win this one.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n

Pete Alonso defended Cespedes\u2019 decision to leave and the way the player handled it.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t know what was going on \u2026 I was a little confused,\u201d Alonso said. \u201cBut I totally understand why he is doing it. He\u2019s got a family to take care of and if he were to come down with something that doesn\u2019t help him or his family out, so I totally get it. I was kind of caught off guard, but, hey, it\u2019s his choice and I respect it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alonso was asked if he would have left without saying goodbye to his teammates.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I was opting out or I had to leave or had to go, if I had guys\u2019 numbers I would give them a call,\u201d Alonso said. \u201cBut I don\u2019t know the situation.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
