\/><\/p>\n<div>\n                            Google\u2019s surveillance-based business model has attracted another prominent opponent.<\/p>\n<p>After surviving attacks from <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/googles-methods-spying-employees-revealed-183100031.html\">employees<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2019\/11\/google-facebook-surveillance-privacy\/\">human rights groups<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2019\/oct\/04\/shoshana-zuboff-surveillance-capitalism-assault-human-automomy-digital-privacy\">Harvard professors<\/a>, and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/life-style\/gadgets-and-tech\/google-spying-duckduckgo-privacy-b1817908.html\">rival firms<\/a>, the company now faces a more powerful foe: a quartet of US attorneys <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span>The bipartisan group of AGs\u00a0sued Google on Monday for allegedly<\/span> deceiving users to profit from their location data.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoogle falsely led consumers to believe that changing their account and device settings would allow customers to protect their privacy and control what personal data the company could access,\u201d said Karl Racine, the Washington DC<span> AG who is leading the campaign.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe truth is that contrary to Google\u2019s representations it continues to systematically surveil customers and profit from customer data.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The accusations shine the spotlight on the mysterious use of \u201cdark patterns.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_accusations_against_Google\"><\/span>The accusations against Google<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Racine and his colleagues from <span>Indiana, Texas, and Washington accuse Google of manipulating users to access location\u00a0data.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This data is then used to build <span>detailed user profiles and sell highly targeted advertising.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The AGs argue that the search giant makes it \u201cnearly impossible\u201d for users to stop their location from being tracked.<\/p>\n<p>Their three-year investigation follows<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/north-america-science-technology-business-ap-top-news-828aefab64d4411bac257a07c1af0ecb\">a 2018 report by the Associated Press<\/a><span>, which revealed that Google \u201crecords your movements even when you explicitly tell it not to.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Google claims that changing device and account settings can protect your data. However, the AGs maintain that the company systematically surveils users no matter what settings they choose.<\/p>\n<p>They say this snooping is <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>lied to both Android smartphones and other devices running services including Google Search, Google Maps, and Google Photos.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Dark_patterns\"><\/span>Dark patterns<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A central complaint is that Google relies on \u201cdark patterns\u201d to undermine consumers\u2019 informed choices.<\/p>\n<p>This involves using d<span>eceptive design choices that alter people\u2019s decision-making in ways that harm the user and benefit Google.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>These tactics include <span>repeatedly prompting users to enable location in certain apps, and claiming products won\u2019t function properly without enabling location.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The AGs also accuse Google of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Making it impossible for users to opt-out of having their location tracked<\/li>\n<li>Deceiving users about their ability to protect their privacy through account settings<\/li>\n<li>Misleading Android users about their ability to protect their privacy through their device settings<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In a statement, Google spokesperson Jos\u00e9 Casta\u00f1eda said the accusations are based on \u201cinaccurate claims and outdated assertions\u201d about the company\u2019s settings:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We have always built privacy features into our products and provided robust controls for location data. We will vigorously defend ourselves and set the record straight.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Googles_location_tracking_future\"><\/span>Google\u2019s location tracking future<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The new lawsuits follow similar causes in Australia and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=google+arizona+location+tracking&amp;sxsrf=AOaemvIMizc9hDny4m-fO0vxUGhlWc2Lfg%3A1643133851406&amp;ei=mzvwYcqvGM-fgQav4b2YDA&amp;ved=0ahUKEwiK6Z_Mvs31AhXPT8AKHa9wD8MQ4dUDCA4&amp;uact=5&amp;oq=google+arizona+location+tracking&amp;gs_lcp=Cgdnd3Mtd2l6EANKBAhBGABKBAhGGABQAFgAYGtoAHACeACAAQCIAQCSAQCYAQCgAQHAAQE&amp;sclient=gws-wiz\">Arizona<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The complaints note that location data is very sensitive for users. Just a small <span>amount\u00a0can expose a person\u2019s identity and routines. It can also be used to infer personal details.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The new lawsuits seek to fine Google and end <span>the company\u2019s \u201cdeceptive and unlawful practices.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Racine, the AG leading the campaign, ultimately wants to shift control over data use from Google to consumers.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019ll have a fight on his hands: location data is a key part of Google\u2019s digital advertising business, which generated nearly $150 billion in revenue in 2020 alone.\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
