\n Conservative: Blas Fiddles While Gotham Burns<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cNew Yorkers sense the city, already reeling from the virus and the economic effects of the lockdown, is sinking into lawlessness,\u201d warns National Review\u2019s Kyle Smith. Since the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, \u201cangry mobs\u201d have taken to the streets and, as a result of this sort of lawlessness, homicides, burglaries and shootings are all up significantly. And yet Mayor Bill de Blasio\u2019s \u201canswer has been not to make amends with the police but to send crime counselors out into the street to advise people not to do bad things.\u201d As his term peters out, expect Hizzoner to \u201ccontinue to antagonize the cops.\u201d The rest of us will have \u201cto deal with the fallout.\u201d<\/p>\n

Culture critic: The Theory Behind Woke<\/strong><\/p>\n

A \u201ccurious new vocabulary began to unspool itself in our media\u201d a few years ago, observes Andrew Sullivan on his blog, with \u201call the app<\/a>earance of a top-down re-ordering of language, rather than a slow, organic evolution from below.\u201d Terms such as \u201cnon-binary, toxic masculinity, white supremacy, traumatizing, queer, transphobia, whiteness, mansplaining\u201d came \u201cout of nowhere to reach sudden new heights.\u201d They\u2019re the product of critical theory and its \u201capplied\u201d version, social<\/a> justice. Forget diversity of ideas: \u201cWhat matters is a diversity of identities that can all express the same idea: that liberalism is a con-job.\u201d That\u2019s why every New York Times op-ed now \u201creads exactly alike.\u201d Liberalism, with its \u201cnon-zero-sum pluralism,\u201d is a threat to \u201cwokeness,\u201d because it shows progress is \u201cpossible in a liberal democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Iconoclast: Misunderstanding Our Wild Ancestors<\/strong><\/p>\n

Left and right are raging over the historic figures we honor, yet the oft-violent debate \u201cleaves out an essential factor \u2014 the sheer weirdness of the New World,\u201d Michael Lind contends at Tablet. To wit, \u201cwe in the countries of the Western Hemisphere, North and South, are living in the ruins of various ambitious projects undertaken by long-dead people, many of whom were bats\u200a-\u200a-\u200at crazy.\u201d Take Christopher Columbus, a figure reviled for committing atrocities that were common to his age \u2014 and were committed by Columbus\u2019 Native-American victims, too. No, \u201cwhat makes Columbus memorable is not his all-too-common brutality but his epic confusion. Euro-American civilization began with a mistake.\u201d The explorer, after all, \u201cwent to his grave stubbornly believing that the Americas were islands near Japan and China, like Taiwan or the Philippines.\u201d Our past is full of wild visionaries like him, from the Puritans to positivists, which suggests \u201cthe future may believe we were bats\u200a-\u200a-\u200at crazy, too.\u201d<\/p>\n

Student: Don\u2019t Blame SHSAT for School Failures<\/strong><\/p>\n

At Gotham Gazette, Amir Davis, a 2020 African-American graduate of Brooklyn Tech HS, is troubled by the \u201cmisguided arguments\u201d against the Specialized High School Admissions Test, which is used to screen enrollment into schools like his. Though \u201cdisheartened\u201d by these schools\u2019 lack of \u201cracial diversity,\u201d Davis blames elementary and middle schools, rather than the test itself, for not giving kids \u201cadequate tools to succeed.\u201d Indeed, some kids don\u2019t even have \u201csimple multiplication and division skills.\u201d Meanwhile, officials like Mayor de Blasio and Chancellor Richard Carranza ignore \u201cthe drastic consequences of abolishing the test\u201d and are pushing for a far more unfair system. They need to stop using it \u201cas a scapegoat\u201d for their own \u201cinadequacies in providing a strong education to elementary and middle-school students.\u201d<\/p>\n

From the left: Screw Kansas<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cIn 2016,\u201d Matt Taibbi recalls at his blog, \u201cit was clear only a few people in the lefty media world understood what [President] Trump was up to, and why he was a real threat to win.\u201d The few exceptions included \u201cWhat\u2019s the Matter With Kansas?\u201d author Thomas Frank, whose books blamed the left for abandoning the white working class. Yet \u201cFrank seemed to be put into deep-freeze . . . largely, I think, because he was telling a truth no one wanted to hear about the difference between the way the New York Times saw America, and how, say, Iowans or Nebraskans saw it. Trump, meanwhile, constructed his argument for the presidency atop that difference.\u201d Warning to liberals: Trump is still doing the same today.<\/p>\n
