Denise Batters<\/strong>\u2019 petition demanding an accelerated leadership review was blocked by the party\u2019s governing council. The Foothills EDA passed a motion on Jan. 22 calling for a leadership review vote no later than June 15 to \u201censure a united and strong Conservative Party of Canada in preparation for an imminent election.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Poilievre to the rescue?<\/strong> In the <em>Globe<\/em>, <strong>Gary Mason<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/opinion\/article-erin-otooles-days-a-conservative-leader-appear-to-be-numbered\/\">writes that<\/a> O\u2019Toole\u2019s days are numbered, and suggests <strong>Pierre Poilievre<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ears poised to take over.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text ep-1 font-pratt\">After an earlier tweet of Mr. Poilievre\u2019s denouncing \u201cvaccine vendettas,\u201d Conservative MP <strong>Mark Strahl<\/strong> said on <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a>: \u201cThank you @PierrePoilievre for your clear and decisive leadership.\u201d Conservative MPs aren\u2019t even disguising their disdain for Mr. O\u2019Toole now. Meantime, a new Nanos poll conducted for <em>The Globe and Mail<\/em> shows <strong>Mr. Poilievre has significantly more support<\/strong> among Canadians than Mr. O\u2019Toole, a survey that is bound to cast a long shadow over the CPC\u2019s retreat. It also says Canadians are five times more likely to say Mr. O\u2019Toole has done a poor job as leader than an excellent one. Not good.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Won\u2019t back down:\u00a0<\/strong>The federal government says it <strong>will not back down<\/strong> on its vaccination rule for cross-border truckers despite a convoy headed to the city to protest, CBC <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/vaccine-mandate-double-down-convoy-1.6326821\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Transport Minister <strong>Omar Alghabra<\/strong> said Tuesday the government is not interested in alternatives like rapid testing for unvaccinated truckers: \u201cOur plan is to defeat COVID and end the pandemic as quickly as possible. What we\u2019re doing right now is for the protection of truck drivers but also for the protection of our supply chains and our economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Extremists on the road:<\/strong> Some Canadian far-right groups hope the so-called \u201cFreedom Convoy\u201d will be Canada\u2019s version of last year\u2019s Jan. 6 riot in Washington, Global <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/8537433\/far-right-groups-trucker-protest-jan-6\/\">reports<\/a>. \u201cA review of the protesters\u2019 online communications, including real-time chatter over walkie-talkie app Zello, suggest a collection of <strong>grievances and anti-government sentiment<\/strong> that extends beyond vaccine mandates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maclean\u2019s contributor Justin Ling looks at the group\u2019s MoU in this <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Justin_Ling\/status\/1486151061849137156?s=20\">Twitter thread<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I&#8217;m not sure that we&#8217;re adequately paying attention to the fact that &#8220;Canada Unity,&#8221; which is *the* organizing body for the trucker convoy, is essentially calling for the removal of the Canadian government. (More below)<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Justin Ling (@Justin_Ling) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Justin_Ling\/status\/1486151061849137156?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 26, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Won\u2019t be tolerated:<\/strong> A key convoy organizer said on Facebook that <strong>acts of violence or vandalism\u00a0won\u2019t be tolerated<\/strong>: \u201cIf you see participants along the way that are misbehaving, acting aggressively in any way or inciting any type of violence or hatred, please take down the truck number and their licence plate number so that we can forward that to the police,\u201d <strong>Tamara Lich<\/strong> said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Against O\u2019Toole:<\/strong> Lich also called, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Tamara_MVC\/status\/1486113145676517390\">on Twitter<\/a>, for the Tories to get rid of their leader, who has dodged questions about whether he will meet with the group.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alarm bells:<\/strong> <strong>Justin Trudeau<\/strong> is seeking to exploit the convoy for political reasons, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/torontosun.com\/opinion\/columnists\/lilley-trudeau-uses-trucker-protests-as-political-weapon\">writes<\/a> <strong>Brian Lilley<\/strong> in the <em>Toronto Sun<\/em>, but mainstream business organizations are legitimately concerned about a policy that will strain supply chains.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The people sounding the alarm bells and asking the government to reconsider its position \u2014 in order to put very practical considerations ahead of dogma \u2014 aren\u2019t radicals; they\u2019re far from it. They are the moderate voice of our largest business organizations that have worked alongside the government throughout the pandemic.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Radical Tories:<\/strong> Conservatives \u201cappear to\u00a0be dug in hard\u201d to anti-mandate rhetoric, CBC\u2019s <strong>Aaron Wherry<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/covid-vaccine-mandate-trucker-conservative-1.6325998\">notes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Even if\u00a0the vaccine mandate for cross-border transport ends up contributing to those problems, Poilievre\u2019s simplistic summation can just as easily be turned around. If the shelves are full, thank a vaccinated trucker. <strong>If the shelves are empty, thank an unvaccinated trucker<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Extreme tweet:<\/strong>\u00a0Public Safety Minister <strong>Marco Mendicino<\/strong> said Tuesday that Twitter should remove a tweet from Independent Ontario MPP <strong>Randy Hillier<\/strong>, who called Alghabra a \u201cterrorist,\u201d CTV <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalnewswatch.com\/2022\/01\/25\/public-safety-minister-calls-for-removal-of-hillier-hate-tweet-about-alghabra\/#.YfCDnQXD45x.twitter\">reports<\/a>. Mendicino said the tweet is \u201cflagrantly abusive, offensive and Islamophobic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Underwhelmed:<\/strong> Toronto Liberal MP<strong> Nathaniel Erskine-Smith<\/strong> is to table a motion in Parliament calling on the government to devote another $1.1 billion to the fair global distribution of COVID-19 vaccine doses, the<em> Star<\/em> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/politics\/federal\/2022\/01\/24\/send-more-covid-19-vaccine-doses-to-poor-countries-liberal-mp-tells-trudeau-government.html\">reports<\/a>:\u00a0 \u201cCanada has played a leading role in global efforts, but those global efforts have been mediocre and underwhelming and insufficient. Outside the G7 our debt-to-GDP ratio lags behind Australia, Brazil, Denmark, Indonesia, Ireland, Latvia, Mexico, New Zealand, Poland, South Africa, Turkey and Vietnam, to name just a few. It is true that Canada\u2019s net debt-to-GDP ratio, which includes pension plan and other assets, is considerably lower. Nonetheless, the 38-member <strong>OECD ranks Canada as its ninth-most indebted country<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>MP fined:<\/strong> Calgary Skyview Liberal\u00a0MP <strong>George Chahal<\/strong> has paid a $500 fine after taking an opponent\u2019s campaign flyer from a front door and replacing it with his own, CP <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.winnipegfreepress.com\/canada\/liberal-mp-george-chahal-fined-500-for-taking-tory-election-leaflet-from-front-door-576119872.html\">reports<\/a>.
