However, the industry has become complex and fragmented, with multiple isolated solutions and inconsistent <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> standards. This slows and threatens the adoption of EVs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In response,\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/pionix.de\/\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">PIONIX<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0has developed a project called\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lfenergy.org\/projects\/everest\/\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">EVerest<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, an open-source software stack designed to establish a common base layer for a unified EV charging ecosystem.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">EVerest has gained some serious cred in the developer world, with its biggest support <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lfenergy.org\/\">LF Energy<\/a> (the Linux open-source foundation for the power systems sector). I spoke to the project\u2019s brainchild, Dr. Marco M\u00f6ller, managing director of PIONIX, to find out more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whats_the_problem_with_EV_charging_software\"><\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">What\u2019s the problem with EV charging software?\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The idea for EVerst came from Marco M\u00f6ller\u2019s previous work at German commercial drone software firm\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mavinci.de\/\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">MAVinci<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0(Intel acquired the company in 2016). M\u00f6ller shared:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Our acquisition by Intel coincided with their switch to open-source software. An open tech stack means developers can focus on more exciting work and bring products to market faster.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_EVerest_EV_charging_solution\"><\/span>The EVerest EV charging solution<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">M\u00f6ller explained that the project had received interest from various players in the EV charging space, except for a few big proprietary players, noting:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Cloud operators were particularly keen on standardization. I was told that the market leader for charge point clouds has more than 200 different dialects implemented of the same protocol. This is because everyone is doing slightly different ChargePoint protocols. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The EVerest software platform runs on a lightweight Linux system inside the charging point. It manages communication around energy between different players:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Car (e.g., EN\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/IEC_61850\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">IEC 61851<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">,\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iso.org\/sites\/outage\/\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">ISO 15118<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Local energy generation &amp; batteries (e.g.<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Modbus\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, Modbus<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">,\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/sunspec.org\/\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Sunspec<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Grid (including specific grid constraints)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Cloud backend \/ payment (e.g. OCCP 1.6)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The user (interface)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">EVerest digitally abstracts the complexity of multiple standards and use cases. This means it can run on any device, from AC home chargers to public DC charging stations. The insertion of <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@alex.birsan\/dependency-confusion-4a5d60fec610\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">malicious code being inserted into packages<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0in repositories (for example, npm and PyPI) is rising, and the recent\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Log4j zero-day<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0exploits demonstrate the challenge of code maintenance in open source projects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">However, having a project under the auspices of The Linux Foundation is an advantage. It especially helps lend credibility increases the number of people working on the code. M\u00f6ller noted:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">We follow the security standards as well as we can. We have quite an advanced team. They know what they\u2019re doing. We try to do extra security layers. Open source still has the benefit that a lot of people are looking at it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The project is also liaising with the hacker enthusiast community to participate in hackathons over the summer months hopefully. As Marco asserts, \u201cthese people who break systems for fun.\u201d The team is also raising venture capital, which will go into developing and improving the open-source codebase.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In short, EVerest welcomes the global community to contribute to this project.
