Training mission: Justin Trudeau<\/strong> announced Wednesday that Canada will not send small arms to Ukraine to defend the country against a threatened Russian incursion, Global reports<\/a>. The government is extending a training mission<\/strong> for three years and boosting intelligence sharing, and will send \u201cnon-lethal equipment.\u201d The Liberal cabinet discussed the matter at three-day virtual cabinet retreat that just ended.<\/p>\n

Trudeau said Canada is deploying 60 additional Canadian Forces members now to join the roughly 200 others already on the ground as part of Canada\u2019s military training mission, and that he is authorizing the potential for another 200 to be deployed in the future. \u201cThings like body armour, optics and scopes, elements like that,\u201d Trudeau said when asked to explain what non-lethal aid<\/strong> Canada plans to provide and why the decision was made not to send weapons.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Offside:<\/strong> Three NDP MPs have been criticized for posting objectionable comments online about the Ukrainian situation, Global reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Prepared for violence:<\/strong> Ottawa Police Chief Peter Sloly<\/strong> told the police services board Wednesday\u00a0that he is working with the RCMP and intelligence bodies to prepare for a trucker convoy protesting vaccine mandates that is making its way to Ottawa, CP reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Sloly said the convoy organizers have been co-operative<\/strong> in telling police about their plans for the protest, which he predicts could last several days, but the situation is evolving rapidly. Deputy Chief Steve Bell said police are \u201ctracing parallel groups\u201d that are preparing to join the truckers, as well as counter-protesters, and are monitoring social media<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

CPC on side:<\/strong> While Ottawa is bracing for the angry truckers, CPC MPs are cheering them on<\/strong>, CTV reports<\/a>. That makes some people uneasy, given that some of the protesters app<\/a>ear to be extremists.<\/p>\n

While organizers say they are running a peaceful and law-abiding demonstration, experts have raised concerns<\/strong> over the online discourse related to the trucker convoy. From social media posts expressing anti-government and violent sentiments to a suggestion that the event could be like a Canadian version of the January 6, 2021 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, experts CTVNews.ca spoke with said that the messaging and rhetoric is veering into dangerous territory.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Fringe:<\/strong> Trudeau called the protesters a \u201csmall fringe minority of people\u201d who hold \u201cunacceptable views,\u201d Global reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Singh against:<\/strong> On Wednesday, Jagmeet Singh condemned the convoy, saying protesters are pushing \u201cfalse information\u201d through \u201cinflammatory, divisive and hateful comments,\u201d CBC reports<\/a>. Online records show Singh\u2019s brother-in-law, Jodhveer Singh Dhaliwal<\/strong>, donated $13,000 to the demonstrators.\u00a0\u201c[I] \u2026 disagree with him about this donation and told him so,\u201d Singh said. \u201cI am against this convoy and against the dangerous and divisive rhetoric we\u2019re seeing coming from it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pleads for calm:<\/strong> Erin O\u2019Toole<\/strong> took to<\/a> the Toronto Sun<\/em> on Wednesday to plead for calm and unity.<\/p>\n

Not calm:<\/strong> Meanwhile, another Western CPC riding association called for a leadership review, presumably because they would like to get rid of O\u2019Toole, Global reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Levi Derkson<\/strong>, the Carlton Lake\u2014Eagle Creek riding president, told Global News that they were inspired by the Foothills motion, but that they did not co-ordinate with other EDAs. \u201cWe are representing members who have concerns<\/strong> about the policy direction that the current leadership is taking the party,\u201d Derkson wrote in a statement.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Report today:<\/strong> CPC MPs will be briefed today on a review of the party\u2019s election loss by former Alberta MP James Cumming<\/strong>, CP reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Part of the presentation will also focus on Leader Erin O\u2019Toole\u2019s<\/strong> performance during the campaign \u2014 something those concerned about his leadership are eager to see. The party wouldn\u2019t specify if caucus will be shown the review in its entirety, with a spokesman saying only that O\u2019Toole committed to elected members receiving a briefing, unlike campaign reviews of the past which have been held by the party leader and senior staff.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

In waiting?<\/strong> O\u2019Toole did an interview<\/a> with the Post\u2019s<\/em> John Ivison<\/strong> to make his case for his continued leadership in advance of the report, arguing the party mustn\u2019t become the NDP of the right: \u201cWe have to offer a government-in-waiting<\/strong> to the Liberals. We can\u2019t focus on one or two issues that might be the top priority for some people in politics. We have to tackle all issues, including the environment and being more inclusive with the LGBTQ community.\u201d<\/p>\n

Not both:<\/strong> Canadian rocker Neil Young<\/strong> has pulled his music off Spotify to protest the way the streaming service allows podcaster Joe Rogan<\/strong> to spread vaccine misinformation, the Hollywood Reporter<\/em> reports<\/a>. Young wrote on his web site: \u201cI am doing this because Spotify is spreading fake information about vaccines \u2014 potentially causing death to those who believe the disinformation being spread by them. \u2026 They can have Rogan or Young. Not both.\u201d<\/p>\n
