\n Reni Santoni, who played Poppie in \u201cSeinfeld\u201d and app<\/a>eared in \u201cDirty Harry\u201d and other films, died on Aug. 1. He was 81.<\/p>\n

According to a Facebook<\/a> post written Monday by his friend and TV writer-producer Tracy Newman, Santoni died on Saturday morning. He had been \u201csick for quite a while.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThose of you who knew him know how funny he was, what a terrific actor, improviser, performer, etc.,\u201d the post read. \u201cSo brilliant. I loved him very much and will miss him terribly. Another great one is gone. I have a lot of wonderful pictures of him, and will post them over the next week. My heart goes out to his son, Nick, who has been such a comfort to Reni over that past five years or more.\u201d<\/p>\n

Born in New York City, Santoni built his acting career from off-Broadway theatre, starring in \u201cThe Umbrella\u201d and \u201cThe Mad Show.\u201d His first significant film role was an uncredited appearance in the 1964 film \u201cThe Pawnbroker,\u201d in which he played a junkie trying to sell a radio.<\/p>\n

His first leading role was in Carl Reiner\u2019s \u201cEnter Laughing\u201d (1967), in which he played a delivery boy in New York City. Other film credits include inspector Chico Gonz\u00e1lez in \u201cDirty Harry\u201d (1971), prison official Ramon Herrera in \u201cBad Boys\u201d (1983) and detective Tony Gonzales in \u201cCobra\u201d (1986).<\/p>\n

One of Santoni\u2019s most notable roles was on \u201cSeinfeld\u201d as Poppie, an unhygienic restaurateur. He had a recurring role as one of Arthur Hill\u2019s assistants on the final season of ABC\u2019s \u201cOwen Marshall, Counselor at Law\u201d (1973) and played Daniel in \u201c28 Days\u201d (2000), starring Sandra Bullock.<\/p>\n

Santoni is survived by his wife and stage director, Lisa James, and son, Nick.<\/p>\n
