Going to be swarmed:<\/strong>\u00a0Freedom Convoy organizers says protesters intend to gridlock Ottawa<\/strong>, the Post<\/em> reports<\/a>. \u201cThe city\u2019s going to get gridlocked. Completely,\u201d said\u00a0\u00a0Jason LaFace.\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cWhen we first get in there, it\u2019s just going to be everywhere and anywhere and everybody\u2019s just going to be swarmed.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Ontario Provincial Police told the National Post it was unaware how many trucks were in the various convoys, but Ottawa police said Wednesday that they were preparing for the arrival of between 1,000 and 2,000 vehicles<\/strong>. Media reports suggested around 400 vehicles \u2014 truck and personal cars combined \u2014 were in the convoy coming from the west that gathered in Thunder Bay on Wednesday, while other convoys launched from southwestern Ontario and eastern Canada. It\u2019s a far cry from reports of tens of thousands of vehicles that have been circulated on social media<\/a>, but more than enough vehicles to cause traffic headaches<\/strong> in the city.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Getting ready:<\/strong> Police and parliamentary security are bracing<\/strong> for up to 10,000 protesters, CP reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The group billing itself as Canada Unity is demanding that the Governor General<\/a> and Senate combine forces to order the federal and all provincial and territorial governments to lift any remaining COVID-19 restrictions, waive all fines and cancel \u201cillegal\u201d vaccine passports. There is nothing in the Constitution affording the Governor General or the Senate the power to take such action. In a video posted on the group\u2019s Facebook page one supporter said \u201cfailure is not an option. Surrender is not an option<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

MPs warned:<\/strong> Sergeant-at-Arms Patrick McDonell<\/strong> cautioned MPs in the national capital region that they could have protests outside their homes, CTV reports<\/a>. In a memo to MPs, he suggested if that happ<\/a>ens they should \u201cgo somewhere safe.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAvoid physical altercations, even if provoked, close and lock all exterior doors, advise the local authorities\u2026 [and] refrain from posting anything related to the demonstration on social media.\u201d<\/p>\n

NDP MP Charlie Angus<\/strong> did not take that advice<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A win for protesters:<\/strong> Ottawa Public Health closed down<\/a> vaccine clinics.<\/p>\n

Hijacked:<\/strong> The protest convoy has been hijacked<\/strong> by the far right or extreme rhetoric,\u00a0Mike Millian<\/strong>, president of the Private Motor Truck Council of Canada, told<\/a> CBC: \u201cWe\u2019re\u00a0seeing signs calling our government\u00a0communists and Nazis and comparing [the mandate] to the Holocaust. And if you\u2019re comparing this to the Holocaust, you need to educate yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n

Protesters have\u00a0spat on<\/a>\u00a0and threatened<\/a>\u00a0journalists covering the movement.<\/p>\n

Musk onside:<\/strong> Elon Musk<\/strong> tweeted<\/a> in support of the protesters, the Post<\/em> reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n

World record?<\/strong>\u00a0America\u2019s Fox News has an upbeat report<\/a> on what could be a record-breaking assembly of trucks.<\/p>\n

Blames journalists:<\/strong> CPC finance critic Pierre Poilievre<\/strong> critiqued media coverage<\/a> on Twitter.<\/p>\n

Andrew MacDougall<\/strong>, former director of comms to Stephen Harper<\/strong>, has a column<\/a> in the Citizen<\/em>, warning Tories against social-media dopamine hits.<\/p>\n

By all means, keep Trudeau busy on big issues such as inflation, for which he has no answer but \u2014 for the love of God \u2014 keep away from issues where he has the broad support of the public, such as vaccines. Put your dumb-phones down and listen to real people, whether that\u2019s in their homes, at their place of work, or in the aisles of the grocery store. As many as you can. Listen more than you speak. Governing is a deliberative act, not a dopamine pleasure cruise. Playing everything for clicks plunges you deeper into the real-world electoral hole.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Ready to meet:<\/strong>\u00a0Erin O\u2019Toole<\/strong> said Thursday he will meet with truckers taking part in the protest, CBC reports<\/a>: \u201cI will be meeting with truckers, I will be meeting with parts of the convoy. I will try and do it outside of the Hill core so it can be done effectively.\u201d<\/p>\n

Law and order?<\/strong> Globe<\/em> editorialists write that<\/a>\u00a0O\u2019Toole<\/strong> has not done enough to distance his party from the mess descending on the capital.<\/p>\n

Diminished:<\/strong> O\u2019Toole is playing for time after a\u00a0post-election review found fault with the Conservatives\u2019 brand and data game<\/a>, Global\u2019s Alex Boutilier<\/strong> reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The message coming out of O\u2019Toole\u2019s camp on Thursday was an appeal for more time \u2014 to address those perceived \u201cbrand\u201d issues and to build up a new data game, a costly and risky proposal \u2014 and to better acquaint Canadian voters with O\u2019Toole rather than switching horses once again. But there is little doubt, including among O\u2019Toole\u2019s supporters, that the leader has been diminished since last September\u2019s disappointing federal election results.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Free cards?<\/strong> The Star\u2019s<\/em> Stephanie Levitz<\/strong> reports<\/a> the party is considering a proposal that membership be made be free.<\/p>\n

Diversity:<\/strong> The Globe<\/em> reports<\/a> that the party needs to \u201crecruit a wider diversity of candidates and improve its ethnic outreach if it hopes to improve on last year\u2019s results and make gains in Canada\u2019s largest cities.\u201d<\/p>\n

Freeland popular:<\/strong> Speaking of leadership politics, a Nanos poll<\/a> in the Globe<\/em> finds that \u201c25 per cent of respondents said [Chrystia] Freeland<\/strong> is best suited to lead the Liberal Party into the next election, compared with 18.4 per cent who said Mr. Trudeau would be their choice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Who helped?<\/strong> The RCMP is looking for members of a suspected human smuggling ring who helped smuggle a family from India who froze to death during an attempt to illegally cross into the United States, the Post<\/em> reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Influencers abandoned:<\/strong> James William Awad, organizer of a notorious Sunwing flight to Cancun, plans to sue the airline for refusing to fly his group back to Montreal, CBC reports<\/a>: \u201cYes, we saw the videos, there were a few people partying on the plane. But what happened is that [the airlines] decided to put everybody in the same boat.\u201d<\/p>\n
