And actually\u00a0<\/span><i data-stringify-type=\"italic\">waiting<\/i><span>\u00a0while your car gets filled with juice? No thanks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But what if you didn\u2019t have to charge your vehicle at all? What if there was another way? And what if that way was battery swap stations?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Way back in 2013,\u00a0<\/span>Tesla proposed the idea of a 90-second battery swap shop. <span>Two years later, Tesla quit the effort. It switched its strategy, focused on the Supercharger network, and declared that battery swapping was a dead-end.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But is it really? Let\u2019s dig in.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_do_battery_swap_stations_work\"><\/span>How do battery swap stations work?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The idea is simple. You drive up to a car wash-sized station and you hand your vehicle over to the valet \u2014 or even stay inside. The workers and\/or the machines do the rest: bolts are unscrewed, the battery is removed, a new one is replaced, and everything is reassembled.<\/p>\n<p><span>That sounds like it should take forever, right? But based on the swap stations we have so far, the whole process only takes one to three minutes (more on that later).\u00a0That\u2019s a full \u2018charge\u2019 in less time than it takes to drink an espresso. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_are_the_pros\"><\/span>What are the pros?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Besides saving time, you\u2019d also save money.<span>\u00a0The cost of the car can be separated from the cost of the battery pack, making EVs more affordable for some drivers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Plus, you wouldn\u2019t have to worry about battery degradation or warranties. And your vehicle could have a longer life if it\u2019s not attached to its battery. <span>Remember, it\u2019s the batteries that have an expiration date, not the car itself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Similarly, swapping makes it possible to <span>always have the latest battery tech installed in your vehicle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"And_the_cons\"><\/span>And the cons?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>For starters,<span> manufacturers would need to produce compatible batteries for all brands. This means that the battery pack would need a very specific universal design. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s more, we\u2019d need a greater number of batteries to power the same number of EVs. Not to mention the changes required for an entirely new infrastructure.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"China_in_the_lead\"><\/span>China in the lead<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Battery swap stations seem to be picking up pace in China, at least.<\/p>\n<p>In December, NIO <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nio.com\/news\/nio-achieves-annual-target-700-battery-swap-stations-ahead-schedule\">reached 700 stations<\/a> across the country, having provided 5.3 million swaps to NIO car owners. Its swap stations are fully automated and can do the job in three minutes.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"post-image post-mediaBleed aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/2aeda1da-c652-405c-9ecd-efd8ed8c8ed5\">China\u2019s biggest battery manufacturer<\/a> \u2014 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.catl.com\/en\/news\/856.html\">announced<\/a> the installation of its EVOGO swaps stations across 10 Chinese cities.<\/p>\n<p>The company says its new modular battery blocks are compatible with 80% of the global platform-based EV models, but for now the first car to make use of the EVOGO service will be the <span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bestune_NAT\">Bestune Nat MPV<\/a> built by\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.faw.com\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22343076%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22catl-faw-group-set-up-battery-joint-venture%22%7D\">FAW Group<\/a> \u2014 one of CATL\u2019s only one minute.<\/p>\n<p>The same swapping time is also promised by Geely, which is <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/autos-transportation\/chinas-geely-set-up-5000-battery-swapping-stations-by-2025-2021-09-26\/\">planning to set up 5,000 stations<\/a> across China by 2025.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Things_arent_so_optimistic_in_the_West\"><\/span>Things aren\u2019t so optimistic in the West<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In January, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=9LMRGjqTkM0\">NIO launched in Norway Europe\u2019s first battery swap station<\/a>, intending to expand in Germany as well.<\/p>\n<p>In the US, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ample.com\/\">Ample<\/a> has launched five initial stations in San Francisco, and has partnered up with Uber and Sally for its swapping services.<\/p>\n<p>It plans to expand to other US cities, Europe, and Japan.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"So_can_battery_swap_stations_really_take_off\"><\/span>So can battery swap stations really take off?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Maybe in some parts of the world, or well, China.<\/p>\n<p>Apart from an increasing number of companies that are betting on the tech, the Chinese government is also backing battery swapping.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s introduced <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.miit.gov.cn\/xwdt\/gxdt\/sjdt\/art\/2021\/art_c73f1ade7759456fa18586114b555238.html\">its own battery swapping program<\/a>, it has approved <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.samr.gov.cn\/xw\/zj\/202105\/t20210506_329188.html\">national EV battery swap standards<\/a>, and the State Grid (the <span>state-owned electric utility corporation) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/autonews.gasgoo.com\/m\/Detail\/70018208.html\">has struck partnerships<\/a> with multiple major players for the development of battery swap stations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s not really surprising: China is the word\u2019s biggest EV market, its technological pace is faster, and its car industry <span>might be able to make progress where others have failed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But that\u2019s not the case for western countries.<\/p>\n<p>The EV market is only now starting to catch up \u2014 and, along with it, conventional charging infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019d be a huge ask for governments to back <em>another<\/em> charging alternative, and it\u2019d be an even bigger ask for automakers to start using a universal, standardized battery pack.<\/p>\n<p>I seriously doubt that car companies would ever be convinced <span>to tear up existing and future product plans, and start from scratch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Then again, charging station infrastructure was addressed with skepticism in its beginning as well, so perhaps we need more time to really assess how battery swap stations will be received.<\/p>\n<p>But even if they take off, my guess is that they won\u2019t replace good ol\u2019 chargers.
