Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) \u2014 fall into this category. Collectively, they owe between $180,004 and $400,000 in student loans, the records show.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Ocasio-Cortez had a balance of between $15,001 and $50,000 in federal student loans as of 2020, according to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/disclosures-clerk.house.gov\/public_disc\/financial-pdfs\/2020\/10043223.pdf\">her most recent personal financial disclosure<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Despite her $174,000 annual salary, the economics major hasn\u2019t paid off her balance, despite a zero percent interest rate and no payments due since March 2020.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m 32 years old now, I have over $17,000 in student loan debt. And I didn\u2019t go to graduate school because I knew that getting another degree would drown me in debt,\u201d she said in December. Ocasio-Cortez is single, has no children, and is earning almost $200,000 in salary and benefits. She should be setting an example for her constituents and paying down her debts,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI certainly do think it presents a conflict of interest, and I don\u2019t know how anybody can realistically \u2026 tell me how this is essentially different from insider trading,\u201d Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), a North Dakota State University graduate, reported between $15,001 and $50,000 in student loans, according to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/disclosures-clerk.house.gov\/public_disc\/financial-pdfs\/2020\/10043918.pdf\">her most recent filing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>They didn\u2019t return calls.<\/p>\n<p>There are also many non-Squad legislators with outstanding loan balances: Reps. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/disclosures-clerk.house.gov\/public_disc\/financial-pdfs\/2020\/10040276.pdf\">Jahana Hayes<\/a> (D-Conn.) and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/disclosures-clerk.house.gov\/public_disc\/financial-pdfs\/2020\/10040976.pdf\">Grace Meng<\/a> (D-N.Y.) reported between $100,001 and $250,000 in debts, and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/disclosures-clerk.house.gov\/public_disc\/financial-pdfs\/2020\/10040129.pdf\">Veronica Escobar<\/a> (D-Tex.) between $75,005 and $250,000, records show.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/efdsearch.senate.gov\/search\/view\/annual\/dff99f15-f881-4399-be59-b2e054f20b55\/\">disclosed<\/a> between $30,002 and $50,000 in loans for himself and his wife. Rep.
