Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>en if an asteroid hit Earth today?<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>An asteroid isn\u2019t expected to crash into Earth anytime soon but space agencies keep an eye out for them just in case.<\/p>\n<p>Depending on the size of the space rock, an asteroid impact could be an extinction level event and researchers have created simulations to see how bad it could be.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_would_happen_if_an_asteroid_hit_Earth\"><\/span>What would happen if an asteroid hit Earth?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019ve seen the Netflix film Don\u2019t Look Up, you may be concerned about potential asteroid impacts.<\/p>\n<p>However, not all asteroids would mean the end of humanity.<\/p>\n<p>The space rock would have to be pretty large to kill us all.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists think the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs was about 7.5 miles wide.<\/p>\n<p>If an asteroid that size hit Earth today, things would instantly change due to the force of the impact and its knock on effect on the environment.<\/p>\n<p>Experts think we\u2019d experience fires, shock waves, heat radiation, a large crater, acid rain and giant tsunamis if the asteroid hits water.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.beloit.edu\/live\/profiles\/23-britt-scharringhausen\">Britt Scharringhausen<\/a>, an associate professor of physics and astronomy at Beloit College, told Inverse: \u201cAll of the ash from the fires and all of the finer-grain debris from the impact will hang out in the atmosphere for a long time, and we get what\u2019s called an impact winter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s going to block the sunlight, and all that ash falling into the ocean acidifies the top layers.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/01\/asteroid-earth-225.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"Near-Earth asteroid.\" class=\"wp-image-21022998\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/01\/asteroid-earth-225.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/01\/asteroid-earth-225.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/01\/asteroid-earth-225.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Scientists think the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs was about 7.5 miles wide.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cSo you burn things, kill everything in the ocean, and freeze the Earth, and it goes through about two years of constant winter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scharringhausen doesn\u2019t think that all life on Earth would die after a large asteroid impact.<\/p>\n<p>Some small creators survived the asteroid strike that killed the dinosaurs.<\/p>\n<p>If humans took the right precautions, it is possible that they could survive too.<\/p>\n<p>Scharringhausen explained: \u201cNot everything will die.
