{"id":401436,"date":"2022-01-31T00:13:12","date_gmt":"2022-01-30T21:13:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/senate-may-impose-the-mother-of-all-sanctions-on-russia\/"},"modified":"2022-01-31T00:13:12","modified_gmt":"2022-01-30T21:13:12","slug":"senate-may-impose-the-mother-of-all-sanctions-on-russia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/senate-may-impose-the-mother-of-all-sanctions-on-russia\/","title":{"rendered":"#Senate may impose the &#8216;mother of all&#8217; sanctions on Russia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Senate may impose the &#8216;mother of all&#8217; sanctions on Russia<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u200bThe US ambassador to the United Nations said the Security Council would confront Russia over its military threat against Ukraine as two senators predicted a vote as soon as this week on the \u201cmother of all sanctions\u201d against the Kremlin.<\/p>\n<p>Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the US ambassador to the United Nations, said the Security Council on Monday would press Russia on its massive troop buildup along Ukraine\u2019s border and fears that an invasion is imminent. \u200b<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey know that they cannot block the meeting and I expect that, knowing what we\u2019re dealing with, that they will make an attempt,\u201d Thomas-Greenfield said\u200b on <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/russia-chance-diplomatic-ukraine-crisis-us-ambassador\/story?id=82553278\">ABC News\u2019 \u201cThis Week\u200b,\u201d<\/a> noting Russia\u2019s veto power as one of the council\u2019s permanent members.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the Security Council is unified, our voices are unified in calling for the Russians to explain themselves. Bob Menendez, the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations\u00a0Committee, floated the idea that some \u200bpenalties\u00a0may be imposed im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely to deter Russian President Vladimir Putin.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThere are some sanctions that really could take place up front because of what Russia\u2019s already done \u2014 cyberattacks on Ukraine, false-flag operations, the efforts to undermine the Ukrainian government internally,\u201d Menendez \u200b(D-NJ) \u200bsaid on <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/\u200bhttps:\/\/www.cnn.com\/videos\/politics\/2022\/01\/30\/ukraine-russia-sanctions-bob-menendez-jim-risch-sotu-vpx.cnn\">CNN\u200b\u2019s \u201cState of the Union.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the event of an invasion, Menendez said the Kremlin would face \u201cthe mother of all sanctions\u201d targeting Russian banks to cripple the country\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, US would step up supplying Ukraine with lethal aid.<\/p>\n<p>\u200b\u201dThese are sanctions beyond any that we have ever levied before\u200b,\u201d Menendez said.\u200b\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u200bSen. And one of the things about sanctions is once you <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a> that,\u00a0then the deterrent effect is lost,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we\u2019ve been very, very clear that we\u2019re going to look at sanctions and economic consequences, the likes of which we have not looked at before even considering even as far back as 2014,\u201d Kirby said, referring to Russia\u2019s invasion\u00a0of Crimea.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>Despite Russia\u2019s saber-rattling, Kirby said, \u201cit doesn\u2019t have to come to conflict.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe still believe there\u2019s room and space for diplomacy and we\u2019d like to see that be the solution here,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Russia on Sunday shrugged off claims that it was poised to invade its neighbor despite the presence of more than 100,000 troops along the border.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt this time, they\u2019re saying that Russia threatens Ukraine \u2014 that\u2019s completely ridiculous,\u201d \u200bNikolai Patrushev, the head of Russia\u2019s Security Council, said Sunday, according to the Russian <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> agency Tass.\u00a0\u200b<\/p>\n<p>Thomas-Greenfield was skeptical of Russia\u2019s denial.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t amass 100,000 troops if you don\u2019t have intentions to use them,\u201d she\u00a0said on ABC.<\/p>\n<p>The ambassador said the Security Council meeting will give Russia another opportunity to find a diplomatic way out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve made clear that we\u2019re prepared to address our concerns, Ukrainian concerns and Russian concerns at the diplomatic table, but it cannot be done on the battlefield,\u201d Thomas-Greenfield said.<\/p>\n<p><em>With Post wires<\/em>\n                        <\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
