\n The city Board of Elections \u201cmust do better\u201d than its messy handling of mail-in ballots in June\u2019s primaries, Mayor Bill de Blasio said Tuesday \u2014 while still voicing confidence that the system can get in shape by November\u2019s presidential election.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hizzoner weighed in one day after a federal judge ruled that elections officials must count the thousands of mail-in ballots previously deemed invalid due to circumstances beyond the control of voters.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Board of Elections can do better and must do better,\u201d de Blasio told reporters in his daily press briefing.<\/p>\n

The mayor said that he has long had \u201cdeep concerns\u201d about the structure of the BOE, which is made up of 10 commissioners \u2014 two from each borough recommended by political party leaders, and then app<\/a>roved by the City Council.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI think we need to move to a different approach, create a modern management-focused agency to do this work better in the future,\u201d said de Blasio.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, de Blasio said that he believed the BOE as structured could shore up mail-in balloting in time for November.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am certain they can learn from this and be prepared for the general<\/a> election,\u201d he said. \u201cThree moths is a long time.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are whole states in this country that do everything with mail-in [voting] and it works perfectly well.\u201d<\/p>\n

With the coronavirus still raging, there has been a greater push for snail-bail balloting in 2020 races.<\/p>\n

But the early results, at least in New York City, have hardly inspired confidence.<\/p>\n

In one tightly-contested primary alone \u2014 the battle between Rep. Carolyn Maloney and challenger Suraj Patel for the 12th congressional district \u2014 over 12,000 mail-in ballots were initially deemed invalid, by the count of Patel\u2019s campaign.<\/span><\/p>\n

Issues included a lack of postmarks and the ballots arriving past the deadline \u2014 because the BOE, in some cases, only mailed them out on Election Day.<\/span><\/p>\n

Patel was among the candidates who brought the suit that resulted in Monday\u2019s ruling.<\/p>\n

President Trump on Monday called for the race to be run again, even as BOE officials said that Maloney was expected to be certified the victor on Tuesday.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
