\n Mayor Bill de Blasio claimed Tuesday that he\u2019s \u201cnever blamed\u201d coronavirus-shuttered courts for the city\u2019s violent crime spree \u2014 despite having done just that no less than three times over the past month.<\/p>\n

The mayor was grilled about NYPD data in a Post exclusive last week proving the court shutdown wasn\u2019t a driving force behind the spike in crime.<\/p>\n

\u201cI never blamed them,\u201d Hizzoner told reporters at his daily press briefing, referring to the courts that have been operating at limited capacity during the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n

The denial comes after both he and police brass have repeatedly pegged the crime wave to the closed criminal justice system.<\/p>\n

De Blasio turned to the excuse on July 20 when he said, \u201cAn important piece of this equation is the criminal justice system is not functioning the way it normally does. That is just a factual statement.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf anyone wants to contest that, come on down,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

During a July 17 briefing, he begged the Office of Court Administration to fully open the courts \u2014 comments that sparked an immedia<\/a>te rebuke from Chief Judge Janet DiFiore.<\/p>\n

On July 6, de Blasio again linked the closed courts to the crime explosion following a violent July 4th weekend.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe court system\u2019s not working, the economy\u2019s not working, people have been pent up for months and months \u2014 so many issues underlying this challenge,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Still, de Blasio \u2014 who was recently questioned about his grasp on reality \u2014 remained in denial on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to be clear, I said perfect storm more times than I can count,\u201d he said. \u201cYou cannot take away all the underpinnings of normal life and expect the same outcome.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued, \u201cIf the court system didn\u2019t matter, why do we have one? It\u2019s not about blame. Everyone is trying their best to overcome this and come back.\u201d<\/p>\n

The mayor said the city can combat the crime wave by \u201cdeepening\u201d NYPD strategies, working more closely with communities and increasing gun arrests.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
