“#Michael Jackson Broadway show sanitizes his life<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not a smooth musical.<\/p>\n

The troubles over at \u201cMJ: The Musical,\u201d the new show about Michael Jackson that opened Tuesday night on Broadway, are much bigger than the controversy surrounding its subject \u2014 although the two are closely connected.\u00a0<\/p>\n

While the lifeless script<\/a> is written by Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage of \u201cRuined,\u201d the pat dialogue feels as if it was co-authored by a lawyer for the Jackson estate \u2014 one of the producers \u2014 with Wite-Out and a Sharpie.\u00a0<\/p>\n

When Michael (Myles Frost, terrific) isn\u2019t speaking in hokey motivational phrases \u2014 \u201cAn elephant is always ready to go because he sleeps standing up\u201d \u2014 he\u2019s giving vague p.r. statements of innocence about unspecified infractions.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cNo matter what I do, it always gets twisted,\u201d he says to an MTV documentarian (Whitney Bashor) during the 1992 rehearsals for his \u201cDangerous\u201d tour, where \u201cMJ\u201d is set. What he\u2019s referring to is the \u201cWacko Jacko\u201d nickname news<\/a>papers gave the singer \u2014 who died in 2009 \u2014 because of his frequently strange behavior.<\/p>\n

No allegations of sexually abusing children were brought against Jackson until Jordy Chandler did so in 1993 (the case was settled for $23 million). So those regular slumber parties with 8-year-olds at the home of the world\u2019s most famous man that the press so \u201ctwisted\u201d do not come up in the musical. Fine.<\/p>\n

Still, the singer keeps decrying \u201cthe constant noise, the media<\/a>, the lies.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Michael complains to MTV about journalists and to his business manager about tour costs. He lists off his charity work (again, lawyers), giggles a lot, takes painkillers and tells his dancers to do better. Then the cast performs another number in workout clothes. <\/p>\n

We learn next to nothing about a deeply fascinating figure other than a surface-level examination of his difficult childhood during the Jackson Five days with monster dad Joe Jackson (Quentin Earl Darrington, who also plays tour manager Rob) and how that informed his tireless worth ethic.<\/p>\n

In skipping over the most dramatic parts of his life, Nottage seeks to disconnect the artist from the art. That\u2019s been successfully done before with Jackson: in Cirque du Soleil\u2019s music-centric show \u201cMichael Jackson: One\u201d in Las Vegas and \u201cThriller\u201d in London.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Focusing on his excellent songs is the right tack. Who doesn\u2019t love Jackson\u2019s catalog? I certainly do. \u201cThriller\u201d and \u201cBillie Jean\u201d\u00a0are in the show, along with some 30 others, such as \u201cBeat It,\u201d \u201cSmooth Criminal\u201d and \u201cDon\u2019t Stop \u2019til You Get Enough.\u201d So, make them explode off the stage.<\/p>\n

But \u201cMJ,\u201d directed and choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon, does not match\u00a0or really approach the electricity of the King of Pop, who was an unparalleled live performer. The rehearsal-room setting and narrative randomness, particularly in the winding second act, tamps down the concert energy.\u00a0<\/p>\n

That\u2019s not the fault of Frost, the absurdly talented newcomer who captures Jackson\u2019s voice and physicality well. On the contrary, we feel lucky to be witnessing the birth of a new Broadway star. The same is true of the wonderful Tavon Olds-Sample as \u201cThriller\u201d-era Michael who, beaming, transports us back to the 1980s, even when the production around the actor does not. As mom Katherine Jackson, Ayana George has the show\u2019s best musical moment when she duets on \u201cI\u2019ll Be There\u201d with her son.<\/p>\n

All, however, are hobbled by an indecisive script \u2014 the documentary plot and backstory are clumsily combined, and the cartoonish characters are straight outta \u201cScooby-Doo\u201d \u2014 and low-energy, unattractive staging.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Derek McLane\u2019s sets are mostly gray, just like those of Wheeldon\u2019s \u201cAn American in Paris,\u201d possibly to allow the dancing to pop against them. Doesn\u2019t work. Michael wears black and white a lot more often than red, and the colorlessness of the stage flatters nobody.<\/p>\n

The one flicker of Jackson\u2019s (and Wheeldon\u2019s) genius comes before Michael performs \u201cSmooth Criminal,\u201d when stand-ins for Bob Fosse, Fred Astaire and the Nicholas Brothers take the stage, and we see how those icons impact Michael\u2019s movement.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The sequence is novel, invigorating and smart \u2014 exactly what the rest of \u201cMJ\u201d isn\u2019t.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
