Prodigal Son was canceled almost a year ago, leaving fans perplexed because the show was creatively at the top of its game<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Lou Diamond Phillips, who played Gil Arroyo on the thriller, is opening up about his shock when the cancellation was announced.<\/p>\n

The star was certain a third season would be commissioned.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne hundred percent, I thought it was the call to say, \u2018Hey, buddy, we\u2019re going back to work in July,\u2019\u201d he shared to TV Line.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had every reason, as did the cast and crew, to believe that this was going to be the case.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cUltimately, when [Fox] app<\/a>roved a cliffhanger at the end of Season 2, I thought there was no question. You don\u2019t do that if you\u2019re going to pull the plug,\u201d Lou added.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou say, \u2018Hey, guys, wrap it up.\u2019 You usually get an indication about which way things are going, so this came out of the blue like a thunderbolt.”<\/p>\n

\"Gil's<\/img><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

“And literally, as they were closing the doors to the airplane, Chris said, \u2018Bro, they cancelled us.\u2019 And I was like, \u2018You\u2019re joking, right? You\u2019re kidding.\u2019 It was stunning.\u201d<\/p>\n

The star admitted he was “stung” by the cancellation.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not denigrating any other shows, but there\u2019s so much that\u2019s run-of-the-mill and safe and middle-of-the-road on television,\u201d he shared.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor Prodigal Son to be as unique and different and exciting [as it was], and to have that cast \u2014 I just really feel as if this was a mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Gil's<\/img><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

The rest of the cast was shocked by the decision to end the show, with many of them reacting via social media<\/a> in May 2021.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat a trip<\/a>. Playing Malcolm has been a joy and a privilege. The best cast on network TV and the most unique show around,” Tom Payne wrote on Twitter before teasing the final episodes.<\/p>\n

“We did it in style. Love to everyone who enjoyed it all along with us. And check out the last two eps! THEY ARE AMAZING.”<\/p>\n

\u201cJust wanted to pop on & say THANK YOU, wonderful #Prodigies, for sharing this adventure with us,” Bellamy Young said.<\/p>\n

\"Malcolm<\/img><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

“I am, as you can imagine, heartbroken that we can\u2019t keep telling this story. We\u2019re gonna go out in STYLE tho- these last 2 eps are Fire. Love each of you. So much.\u201d<\/p>\n

There was a push to move the show to HBO Max, but a deal could not be reached.<\/p>\n

Lou has since returned to FOX with a role on The Cleaning Lady.<\/p>\n
