{"id":40334,"date":"2020-08-04T20:40:00","date_gmt":"2020-08-04T17:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/scientists-worried-after-amazon-rainforest-sees-huge-surge-in-fires\/"},"modified":"2020-08-04T20:40:00","modified_gmt":"2020-08-04T17:40:00","slug":"scientists-worried-after-amazon-rainforest-sees-huge-surge-in-fires","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/scientists-worried-after-amazon-rainforest-sees-huge-surge-in-fires\/","title":{"rendered":"#Scientists worried after Amazon rainforest sees huge surge in fires"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Scientists worried after Amazon rainforest sees huge surge in fires<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"article-wrapper\" role=\"main\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>        August 4, 2020 <span>|<\/span> 1:40pm            <\/p>\n<div id=\"featured-image-wrapper\">\n                        Enlarge Image<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The National Institute for Space Research (Inpe) recorded 6,803 fires in the Amazon in July, up from 5,318 in July 2019.\" id=\"standard-article-image\"  src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/08\/amazon-fires-78.jpg?quality=90&#038;strip=all&#038;w=618&#038;h=410&#038;crop=1\" ><\/img><br \/>\n                <span>The National Institute for Space Research (Inpe) recorded 6,803 fires in the Amazon in July, up from 5,318 in July 2019.<\/span><br \/>\n                            <span>Christian Braga\/Greenpeace<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n                        Thousands of fires have erupted in the Amazon rainforest, Brazil\u2019s space agency has reported, threatening a repeat of the catastrophic blazes that devastated the region last year.<\/p>\n<p>The National Institute for Space Research (Inpe) recorded 6,803 fires in the Amazon last month, up from 5,318 in July 2019.<\/p>\n<p>A huge surge was detected towards the end of the month, with more than 1,000 fires registered on July 30, the highest number for a single day in July since 2005, according to a separate analysis by Greenpeace Brasil.<\/p>\n<p>The blazes come as Brazil prepares to enter its annual \u201cfire season,\u201d which typically hits in August each year.<\/p>\n<p>There are concerns that Brazil could see a repeat of the terrible blazes seen in August 2019, when 30,900 fires were recorded by Inpe \u2013 a 12-year high for the month.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a terrible sign,\u201d said Ane Alencar, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a> director at Brazil\u2019s Amazon Environmental Research Institute (IPAM).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can expect that August will already be a difficult month and September will be worse yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Environmental advocates blame right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro for emboldening illegal loggers and miners to destroy the forest.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16084028\"><img alt=\"More than 1,000 fires were registered in the Amazon rainforest on July 30.\" data- data- height=\"441\" width=\"662\"><\/img><figcaption><span>More than 1,000 fires were registered in the Amazon rainforest on July 30.<\/span><span>Christian Braga\/Greenpeace<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Bolsonaro defends his plans to introduce mining and farming in protected reserves as a way to lift the region out of poverty.<\/p>\n<p>This year, the president authorized a military deployment from May to November to combat deforestation and forest fires.<\/p>\n<p>He has also banned setting fires in the region for 120 days.<\/p>\n<p>In 2019, Brazil instituted the same temporary policies later in the year, only after fires in the Amazon provoked global outcry in August.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists say the rainforest is a vital defense against climate warming because it absorbs greenhouse gases.<\/p>\n<p>Non-government organization Amazon Conservation says it has tracked 62 major fires for the year as of July 30.<\/p>\n<p>Many of those came after July 15, when the fire ban went into effect, indicating it has not been entirely effective, said Matt Finer, who leads the NGO\u2019s fire tracking project.<\/p>\n<p>The overwhelming majority of large fires, where elevated levels of aerosols in the smoke indicate large amounts of burning biomass, h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ened in recently deforested areas, with none found in virgin forest, Finer said.<\/p>\n<p>Criminals <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>ly extract valuable wood from the jungle before setting fire to the land to increase its value for farming and ranching.
