I understand the mood may shift soon. So <strong>we need to turn this into the PM\u2019s problem<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>While the Conservatives debated the contents of a possible statement on Monday, protesters were outside Parliament Hill for a fourth day, blockading streets and ignoring traffic laws. On Thursday, many businesses remained closed over safety concerns, and residents of the core were on day <strong>seven of horns and fireworks<\/strong> disrupting their lives. A Conservative Party spokesperson did not provide a response on Thursday to a request for comment on Ms. Bergen\u2019s stand and whether it has changed.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>PPC threat:<\/strong> Global\u2019s <strong>David Akin<\/strong> has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MariekeWalsh\/status\/1489375999091523595?s=20&amp;t=HxnXnUF_N5VNb-GzKjjq7Q\">an interesting Twitter thread<\/a> pointing out that Bergen, who has spoken up for the protest, comes from a riding where the PPC vote surged in the 2021 election, likely based on objections to health restrictions that brought the convoy of horn honkers to Ottawa.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fairly popular:<\/strong> The protest, which continues to make life miserable for people in downtown Ottawa, is surprisingly popular with Canadians, according to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/news\/canada\/one-third-of-canadians-say-they-have-a-lot-in-common-with-freedom-convoy-protesters?utm_term=Autofeed&amp;utm_medium=Social&amp;utm_source=Twitter#Echobox=1643915800\">an Abacus poll<\/a>\u00a0in the Post.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A new poll released Thursday found that while two out of three respondents feel they \u201chave very little in common with how the protesters in Ottawa see things,\u201d<strong> 32 per cent feel they \u201chave a lot in common.\u201d<\/strong> The poll, conducted by Abacus Data, found that the public\u2019s reaction and sympathy for the convoy in Ottawa and similar protests across the country were divisive and responses mostly correlated to one\u2019s political orientation. People\u2019s Party (82 per cent) and Green Party (57 per cent) voters are more likely to feel aligned with the protesters while the large majority of Liberal (75 per cent), NDP (77 per cent), and Bloc Qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois (81 per cent) voters feel they have very little in common. Conservative party voters were divided, with 46 per cent saying they have a lot in common with how the protesters view things and 54 per cent saying they have little in common.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Not popular downtown:<\/strong> The protest may be popular across the country, but it is <strong>not popular where it is h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ening<\/strong>. Reuters <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/americas\/ottawans-fed-up-with-trucker-blockade-blame-police-inaction-2022-02-03\/\">reports<\/a> on the growing anger in downtown Ottawa.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The city\u2019s police force has <strong>stood idly by<\/strong> as protesters filled jugs of diesel to top up their rigs, which they keep running to provide heat in sub-zero temperatures, rather than cutting off the fuel supply. \u201cFor six days and nights, residents living in downtown Ottawa continue to experience <strong>unprecedented violence<\/strong> on their local streets,\u201d said city councillor <strong>Catherine McKenney<\/strong> in a letter to Prime Minister <strong>Justin Trudeau<\/strong> on Thursday.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Mounties called in:<\/strong> After\u00a0McKenney sent <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cmckenney\/status\/1489271188048257027\">her letter,<\/a>\u00a0<strong>Mayor Jim Watson<\/strong> got on the phone to <strong>Public Safety Minister Marco Mendocino<\/strong>, who <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/marcomendicino\/status\/1489419576865665026\">announced<\/a>\u00a0that the federal government will provide Mounties, CP <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/toronto.citynews.ca\/2022\/02\/03\/rcmp-to-deploy-additional-resources-to-deal-with-ottawa-convoy-protestors\/\">reports<\/a>. Don\u2019t expect the army, though.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Earlier in the day, Prime Minister <strong>Justin Trudeau<\/strong> played down the notion of a military response to the ongoing Ottawa protest, saying that sending in troops is \u201cnot in the cards right now.\u201d One must be \u201cvery, very cautious\u201d about deploying troops on Canadian soil in such cases, Trudeau said at a news conference Thursday. \u201cIt is not something that anyone should enter in lightly.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Anita Anand<\/strong> delivered the same point <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AnitaAnandMP\/status\/1489324237923962881?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1489324237923962881%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fglobalnews.ca%2Fnews%2F8592773%2Fcanadian-military-ottawa-protest-response%2F\">on Twitter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Potential for violence:<\/strong> A counter-protest is being organized for Saturday, which University of Ottawa professor <strong>Regina Bateson<\/strong> warned could lead to violence in <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/regina_bateson\/status\/1489371853894336515\">a worrying Twitter thread<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Poor policing:<\/strong> In the <em>Globe<\/em>, <strong>Gary Mason<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/opinion\/article-ottawa-police-deliver-a-masterclass-in-how-not-to-handle-a-protest\/?utm_medium=Referrer:+Social+Network+\/+Media&amp;utm_campaign=Shared+Web+Article+Links\">wonders<\/a> why the Ottawa police have failed to do a better job managing the situation.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text ep-1 font-pratt\">Canadians across the country have looked on at what is taking place in the capital with a mixture of anger and incredulity. Why has nothing been done? Sure, no one wants to see the police moving in right away with batons and pepper spray, but you\u2019d like to see some kind of sanctions for blocking streets and sounding horns at all hours of the day. <strong>People have been beaten, tasered and arrested by police in this country for doing far less<\/strong> than these demonstrators. Police won\u2019t even threaten to tow their rigs away and as of Thursday had given out just 30 tickets.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Gun charges:<\/strong> A Nova Scotian Afghan veteran who attended the protest\u00a0has been arrested and faces four firearms charges, Global <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/8593064\/ns-man-ottawa-convoy-protest-firearms-charge\/\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Although police did not identify the accused in a news release, a court document identified him as <strong>Jeremy MacKenzie<\/strong>, who was in Ottawa for the so-called truckers\u2019 protest against COVID-19 measures. The host of an anti-authority podcast and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">YouTube<\/a> channel, MacKenzie is a Canadian military veteran who served in Afghanistan. The RCMP alleged in a search warrant application that he had post-traumatic stress disorder.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>No fund them:<\/strong> MPs are taking steps to haul executives from GoFundMe before a parliamentary committee to \u201cto answer questions about the California crowdfunding company\u2019s ability to screen out hate campaigns,\u201d the <em>Globe<\/em> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/canada\/article-gofundme-mps-screen-hate-campaigns-trucker-convoy\/?utm_source=dlvr.it&amp;utm_medium=twitter\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>On Thursday, New Democrat MP <strong>Alistair MacGregor<\/strong> said the House of Commons public safety committee needs to know what security measures GoFundMe has \u201cto ensure the funds are not being used to promote extremism, white supremacy, anti-Semitism and other forms of hate which have been expressed among prominent organizers of the truck convoy currently in Ottawa.\u201d MPs on the committee unanimously passed a motion to call company officials to testify. The convoy organizers deny ties to hate groups<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Tory race:<\/strong> Meanwhile, Conservatives, newly leaderless, are getting ready for a leadership race, the Globe <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-conservatives-need-to-move-quickly-to-replace-erin-otoole-party\/\">reports<\/a>. It might take until fall, they said.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Mark Strahl<\/strong>, the MP for the British Columbia riding of Chilliwack-Hope, said he hoped the new leader would be in place by mid-September for the fall session of Parliament. \u201cDue to the minority parliament, we need to get a new leader in front of Canadians, working on their vision, working with our caucus,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Phones ringing:<\/strong>\u00a0The Post has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/news\/politics\/potential-federal-conservative-leadership-contenders-phones-are-ringing\">a roundup<\/a> of people whose phones are ringing, including Jean Charest and Patrick Brown.\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ChrisGNardi\/status\/1489395729269407749\">Brad Wall<\/a>\u00a0is not going to run.
