Likely some kind of accommodation with the growing Trumpist wing of the party.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In 2015 a high-ranking Harper Conservative told me, unsurprisingly, that Canadian Conservatives had productive and elaborate relationships with conservative parties in the U.K., Australia and New Zealand. They\u2019d exchange low-level and sometimes more senior staff. They\u2019d copy one another\u2019s ads. They\u2019d exchange information <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a>. But Canadian Conservatives, this person told me, had less and less to do with U.S. Republicans, because that party was turning \u201cstrange\u201d and had little, in doctrine or technique, that could be useful in the Canadian context.<\/p>\n<p>That <strong>firewall has collapsed<\/strong>. The people who donate to the Conservative Party of Canada and volunteer for it watch Fox News and read <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook<\/a>. Donald Trump\u2019s endorsement of a so-called \u201ctruckers\u2019 convoy\u201d inspired by the Capital Hill riot of Jan. 6, 2020 was a genuinely exciting moment for a lot of people in today\u2019s Conservative movement. Including, I\u2019m entirely sure, some part of the party\u2019s national caucus.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Powder keg party:<\/strong> In the <em>Globe<\/em>, veteran columnist <strong>Lawrence Martin<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/opinion\/article-the-powder-keg-party-blows-itself-up-again-is-anyone-surprised\/?utm_medium=Referrer:+Social+Network+\/+Media&amp;utm_campaign=Shared+Web+Article+Links\">suggests<\/a> the Tories may end up being led by\u00a0<strong>Pierre Poilievre<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The hard right\u2019s stock and trade is visceral anger. If the O\u2019Toole ouster cements its control, as opposed to the centre right, it will have the effect of further polarizing the country, debasing the dialogue, pitting region against region. On the leadership question, <strong>Pierre Poilievre is one to<\/strong> watch. He is a gifted politician, exceedingly articulate, more capable than anyone in Ottawa of marshalling arguments with precision and power. He is also underhanded and unscrupulous, a polarizer <strong>who will go as low as a crocodile<\/strong> if it suits his needs.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Hideously flawed: Chris Selley<\/strong> has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/opinion\/chris-selley-and-now-for-another-hideously-flawed-conservative-leadership-race\">a funny column<\/a> in the <em>Post<\/em> predicting the leadership race to come will be a mess.<\/p>\n<p>It was the party\u2019s \u201ctrue blue\u201d faction that led the successful calls for O\u2019Toole\u2019s ouster, but that faction doesn\u2019t get to install the next leader. The winner of the next race will once again be the person who can best keep both Tory-minded and Reform-minded voters halfway interested as their first choices are eliminated. (Twelve per cent of first-ballot voters in the 2020 contest declined to cast a third ballot.) So <strong>the incentive to mislead those voters remains<\/strong> \u2014 indeed, it\u2019s probably stronger, because the chances of the Liberals defeating themselves between now and the next election are greater than last time around.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Race is on:<\/strong> CP has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalnewswatch.com\/2022\/02\/02\/erin-otoole-is-out-as-conservative-leader-a-look-at-some-potential-replacements\/#.YfsfgxBpxR2.twitter\">a rundown<\/a> of potential replacements for O\u2019Toole and a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cp24.com\/news\/tories-choose-manitoba-mp-candice-bergen-as-interim-leader-after-ousting-o-toole-1.5764199\">good roundup<\/a>\u00a0of the day\u2019s CPC leadership events.<\/p>\n<p>After ejecting O\u2019Toole at a caucus meeting Wednesday morning, O\u2019Toole released a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/erinotoole\/status\/1488980291108900864\">gracious concession video<\/a>. MPs reconvened Wednesday evening to elect an interim leader, <strong>Candace Bergen<\/strong>, CTV <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/politics\/conservatives-name-candice-bergen-as-interim-leader-after-o-toole-voted-out-1.5765468?cid=sm:trueanthem:ctvnews:twittermanualpost&amp;taid=61fb347d70e35d0001a51b5f&amp;utm_campaign=trueAnthem:+New+Content+(Feed)&amp;utm_medium=trueAnthem&amp;utm_source=twitter\">reports<\/a>. Bergen, who was deputy leader under O\u2019Toole, represents\u00a0Portage\u2014Lisgar, in Manitoba. She is the third female leader of the party, following in the footsteps of <strong>Kim Campbell<\/strong> and <strong>Rona Ambrose<\/strong>. She reportedly bested New Brunswick MP <strong>John Williamson<\/strong> for the job as interim leader. She recently <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/canadian-conservative-deputy-leader-defends-truckers-blasts-blackface-trudeaus-condemnation-of-the-freedom-convoy\/\">defended anti-mandate protesters<\/a> and has previously been criticized for wearing <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/manitoba\/candice-bergen-maga-hat-1.5865727\">a MAGA hat<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bennyjohnson\/status\/1488537206155358211\">video<\/a> of her defending the protesters and attacking Trudeau recently went viral internationally.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cheese:<\/strong> After the caucus meeting, several Saskatchewan MPs popped down to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KevinWaugh_CPC\/status\/1489038906951671811\">take a photo<\/a> with the protesters who are besieging the city, which Ottawa Mayor <strong>Jim Watson<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JimWatsonOttawa\/status\/1489054300785500163\">found disappointing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Army time?<\/strong> Earlier, Ottawa Police Chief<strong>\u00a0Peter Sloly<\/strong> told city councillors the security situation is dire enough that it may be necessary to call in the military, the <em>Globe<\/em>\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/ottawa\/truck-convoy-police-solution-1.6337051\">reports.<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Peter Sloly said the Ottawa police force is considering options ranging from a negotiated resolution to enforcement. But he warned that any option carries risks. Chief Sloly said there are only two occasions that he is aware of in the past 100 years \u2013 the Oka and FLQ crises \u2013 when the military was mixed in with police. \u201cIt is <strong>not a decision to be taken lightly<\/strong>,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ll say it again as I said before, every option is being looked at. None of the options create a beautiful, elegant, simple safe solution. They all come with massive risks.\u201d Chief Sloly also said his service is aware of a<strong> significant element from the United States<\/strong> that has been involved in the funding, organization and demonstrating taking place on Parliament Hill and surrounding streets. He also said more protesters are planning to come to the city by the weekend.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Coutts deal?<\/strong> Meanwhile in Alberta, protesters in an illegal border blockade cleared two lanes, allowing traffic to move, apparently after negotiations, the <em>Calgary Herald<\/em> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/calgaryherald.com\/news\/local-news\/no-arrests-yet-as-tensions-rise-at-coutts-border-blockade\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The blockade, now in its fifth day, is a protest against COVID-19 health measures. The last several trucks blocking Highway 4 had moved as of 2:30 p.m. and traffic was able to proceed through the open lanes, though a long line of vehicles remained pointed toward the port of entry. Chad Williamson, a Calgary lawyer retained by protesters, said the demonstrators spoke with Mounties and agreed to open two blocked lanes. A livestream video posted to Facebook by one of the protesters shows participants voting on opening the lanes. In the video, a speaker says they are opening the lanes with <strong>the understanding the province has agreed to end (some restrictions)<\/strong>. He says if this does not happen, protesters will resume the blockade.\u00a0In a statement, United Conservative Party caucus chair <strong>Nathan Neudorf<\/strong> said no such agreement has been authorized.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Headed to Quebec:<\/strong> In Quebec City, police have begun to block streets in preparation for a protest there, CBC <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/montreal\/truck-convoy-quebec-city-streets-blocked-covid-19-1.6337292\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And Toronto:<\/strong> Police in Toronto are preparing for a protest there, CTV <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/toronto.ctvnews.ca\/mobile\/police-aware-of-trucker-protest-planned-for-toronto-this-weekend-1.5764991\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nofundme:<\/strong> The online fundraising page for the protesters has been shut down, CBC <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/convoy-fundraiser-pause-donors-1.6337375?__vfz=medium%3Dsharebar.\">reports<\/a>, but GoFundMe is not saying what will happen to the $10 million raised so far, much of what appears to come from outside Canada.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2014 Stephen Maher<\/strong><br \/>\n<span class=\"ctx-article-root\"><!-- --><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><script async defer crossorigin=\"anonymous\" src=\"https:\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_US\/sdk.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
