It\u2019s also important that both vehicular categories receive a comparable level of due diligence when it comes to ensuring the safety of car occupants and other road users. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And well, we have a problem. Let me explain what\u2019s got me riled up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This week we\u2019ve seen a clash of the titans between autonomous vehicle industry experts, The New York Times, and Tesla drivers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It started with a rallying cry against the use of misleading terms like \u2018self-driving\u2019 to describe car functionalities that sit firmly in Level 2 in terms of vehicle automation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A New York Times journalist wrote an <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/02\/04\/opinion\/self-driving-car-escalade.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that showed a concerning inability to differentiate <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">between FSD\/ADAS and autonomous driving<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while trying out a Cadillac in <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cadillac.com\/world-of-cadillac\/innovation\/super-cruise\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Super Cruise<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> mode, which left many people greatly concerned.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even when a couple of auto academics asked the journalist in question, Farhad Manjoo, (as well as the Opinion Copy Chief), \u00a0 to correct or clarify the Opinion Copy Chief\u2019s response was:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">The <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nytopinion?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@nytopinion<\/a> copy chief responded in part: \u201cIn short, although the auto industry may distinguish between advanced driver-assistance systems and autonomous or self-driving vehicles, most people do not, and we do not expect them to.\u201d Really, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nytimes?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@NYTimes<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Bryant Walker Smith (@bwalkersmith) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bwalkersmith\/status\/1491389982929743872?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 9, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn short, although the auto industry may distinguish between advanced driver-assistance systems and autonomous or self-driving vehicles, most people do not, and we do not expect them to.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ruckus continued on <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Everyone who walks or bikes should understand that Tesla is risking your life with its \u201cFull-Self Driving\u201d feature.<\/p>\n<p>Like it or not, we\u2019re all part of beta tests being conducted on our public streets \u2014 while <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NHTSAgov?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@NHTSAgov<\/a> sits on its hands.<\/p>\n<p>A quick \ud83e\uddf5: <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/9z3iifjOKc\">pic.twitter.com\/9z3iifjOKc<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 David Zipper (@DavidZipper) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DavidZipper\/status\/1491509334181826571?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 9, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, a video was released this week, where two Tesla owners liken driving to gaming. They film their car at risk of hitting a cyclist, laugh about it, and then the driver says he needs to cut it from the video. They would be texting\/distracted and let their car run someone over and just respond \u201cOops, not my fault\u201d or \u201cthats why its in beta\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Ace (@LN2_R0gue) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LN2_R0gue\/status\/1491189006117511174?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 8, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And it\u2019s not like Tesla\u2019s safety record hasn\u2019t been in the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spotlight<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">time<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and time <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">again<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Is_Tesla_getting_an_easy_ride\"><\/span><strong>Is Tesla getting an easy ride?\u00a0<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier this year, a lobby group called <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/dawnproject.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Dawn Project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> took out a full-page ad in the New York Times. They repeatedly excuse the mistakes that put lives in danger.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part of me thinks okay, Tesla is ostensibly beta testing, so there\u2019s some margin for error.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the other part of me thinks, when did road users, including pedestrians and cyclists, sign up to be guinea pigs (or sitting ducks) while the tech is ironed out?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ve previously asserted that part of the problem is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fuckwit Tesla drivers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a category that certainly doesn\u2019t categorize all Tesla drivers by any means.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it raises worrying questions about parity. Especially when we compare Tesla\u2019s beta testing to the efforts of vehicle tech companies making autonomous taxis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Lets_compare_this_to_the_robotaxi_driving_experience\"><\/span><strong>Let\u2019s compare this to the robotaxi driving experience<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" srcdoc=\"&lt;style&gt;*{padding:0;margin:0;overflow:hidden}html,body{background:#000;height:100%}img{position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;object-fit:cover;transition:opacity .1s cubic-bezier(0.4,0,1,1)}a:hover img+img{opacity:1!important}&lt;\/style&gt;&lt;a href=\" https:=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/img.youtube.com\/vi\/AkI68JuhvUw\/hqdefault.jpg\" style=\"top: 50%;left:50%;width:68px;height:48px;transform:translate3d(-50%,-50%,0)\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are huge contrasts between Tesla\u2019s \u201cFSD\u201d and robotaxis, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which don\u2019t have a human driver behind the wheel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take a look at China\u2019s <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.miit.gov.cn\/xwdt\/gxdt\/art\/2021\/art_cfeb55cbe100409db0b69590e0d9378a.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">regulations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that allow AVs testing on selected highways and city roads. Driving is restricted to specific zones, and safety is prioritized.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, there\u2019s Cruise, which is now <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/02\/01\/cruise-loaded-with-another-1-35b-from-softbank-opens-up-driverless-ride-hailing-to-the-public\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">offering<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> autonomous commercial services in San Francisco.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" srcdoc=\"&lt;style&gt;*{padding:0;margin:0;overflow:hidden}html,body{background:#000;height:100%}img{position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;object-fit:cover;transition:opacity .1s cubic-bezier(0.4,0,1,1)}a:hover img+img{opacity:1!important}&lt;\/style&gt;&lt;a href=\" https:=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/img.youtube.com\/vi\/Pa6uCew5TWs\/hqdefault.jpg\" style=\"top: 50%;left:50%;width:68px;height:48px;transform:translate3d(-50%,-50%,0)\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ok, the robotaxis are <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>ly only operating from 11PM to 5AM. This shields them from some of the conventional driving challenges like peak hour traffic, road work, or rushes of pedestrians and cyclists \u2014 so you could argue they get a safer ride.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the autonomous robotaxis have undergone a gradual process of rigorous testing and piloting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet, Tesla drivers can go where they like. And, too bad if they treat their car as autonomous, when it\u2019s only driver-assist. Further, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">robotaxis have had<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fewer untoward incidents<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while FSD has <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tesladeaths.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">caused several<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s more dangerous? An autonomous robotaxi or a Tesla in \u201cfull-self driving\u201d (driver-assist mode)? We\u2019ve seen little effective effort to curtail Tesla\u2019s rights on the road.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_privilege_of_driving_a_car_is_changing\"><\/span><strong>The privilege of driving a car is changing\u00a0<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The way we experience cars is changing massively especially in how we define what it means to drive a car.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even learning to drive needs to change to effectively accommodate the different responsibilities of the driver, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as cars gain increased autonomy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increasing the levels of vehicle automation is a hard sell to many people outside of the tech bubble. I want people to feel confident and excited about the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a>. And I want them to feel safe co-existing with cars that are both autonomous and engaged in driver-assist mode.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Until that h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ens, we\u2019re sitting in an uncomfortable position, waiting for <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> of the next car crash in driver-assist. <\/span>\n                        <\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
