Before she could respond, her translator did so for her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s not allowed to speak English,\u201d the interpreter said, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/olympics-2022-icehockey\/olympics-ice-hockey-canada-born-player-on-china-team-lets-aide-do-the-talking-idUKL8N2UH0DP\">according to Reuters<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019ll try to answer for her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Newell is fluent in English, Mandarin and French, according to her official Olympic bio. The entire national team plays for the Vanke Rays, many of them American and Canadian.<\/p>\n<p>Newell has Chinese heritage through her mother, who was born in China.
