Maybe this is your first time, maybe you need a refresher, or maybe you just need improve your screenshot-grabbing skills.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I mean, taking a screenshot shouldn\u2019t be too confusing right?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, Windows has a bit of a spotty history with taking screenshots, given Microsoft has implemented a multitude of ways of capturing them. But fret no more, we have you covered here at TNW Basics.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_best_way_for_most_people\"><\/span><b>The best way for most people<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For most people, the easiest way to take a screenshot regularly is using the shortcut <\/span><b>Win+Shift+S<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to activate the Snipping Tool (by \u2018Win,\u2019 we mean the key with the Windows logo).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The built-in screenshot tool got a big makeover for Windows 11 and offers four different ways of capturing your screen, with corresponding buttons at the top of your screen. Simply hover over the window and it\u2019ll be highlighted. Click once and you\u2019re good to go.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Full-screen snip:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This is the mode you want if you just want to take an image of everything on your screen(s). This can be especially handy if you have multiple monitors, as the rectangular snip is unable to capture everything on mismatched display sizes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Important!<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> By default, capturing a snip using this method will simply copy the image to your clipboard. This allows you to easily paste the image into an <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a> like Photoshop, Microsoft Word, or the messaging service of your choice. However, if you were hoping to keep your snip forever, you\u2019ll have to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">manually<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> save the image.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After you capture a snip, you should see a notification pop up on your screen. You can crop the image or annotate it with a variety of pen and highlighter colors. While this isn\u2019t usually a problem in Windows 11 (it used to be the case that menus would often disappear when you move your mouse away while taking a screenshot) you never know when you might need it. You have the option to set a delay for 3, 5, or 10 seconds.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"For_quick_and_easy_captures\"><\/span><b>For quick and easy captures<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s say you just want to quickly save an image of your screen but don\u2019t want to deal with the selection and saving process. Perhaps you\u2019re doing time-sensitive work and can\u2019t afford such distractions, or you need to capture multiple images in quick succession. You can always crop and edit the images later, after all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this case, <\/span><b>Win+PrtScn<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the shortcut for you. Pressing that button com will simply capture everything on your monitor(s) and automatically save an image in your <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pictures &gt; Screenshots<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> folder.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some keyboards may not have a PrtScn button, or the button might play double duty with another function. No problem: just press <\/span><b>Fn+Win+Spacebar<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> instead for identical functionality. I actually use this shortcut more often on my laptop, as it\u2019s easy to reach with my left hand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you only need to copy everything that\u2019s on your screen <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">without<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> automatically saving it \u2014 well, that\u2019s exactly what the <strong>PrtScn<\/strong> button was born to do when used without any additional keys.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_record_a_video_of_your_screen\"><\/span><b>How to record a video of your screen<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What if you need to capture a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">video<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of content on your screen? Luckily Windows has a built-in tool for this as well. While it\u2019s aimed at capturing <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a> clips and can only handle one app at a time, the Windows\u00a0Game Bar is the easiest way to capture video\u00a0using built-in\u00a0tools.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To start recording im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely, simply press <\/span><b>Win+Alt+R<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. By default, this will begin to capture video and audio for whatever your active application is. Note that, unlike previous shortcuts, this will only capture the <em>active<\/em> window.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your Game Bar videos and screenshots will be saved in your PC\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Videos &gt; Captures<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> folder.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"For_the_pros\"><\/span><b>For the pros<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Windows 11\u2019s built-in Snipping Tool and Game Bar will likely suffice for most users, but if you need to capture screenshots multiple times a day, it might be time to install a heavy-duty screen capture tool.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In my case, I often need to know the exact size of a screen capture or create gifs from a video \u2014 neither of which the built-in tools allow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a number of good free applications for this.<\/span> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/getgreenshot.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greenshot<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/getsharex.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ShareX<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are two popular open-source options you should check out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But if your day-to-day work relies on a multitude of screen captures, I highly recommend considering<\/span> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techsmith.com\/screen-capture.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Snagit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ($50, with a 15-day trial). I\u2019ve been using it for a few years now, and have found it to offer the best combination of functionality and simplicity of any screen capture software I\u2019ve tried.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure
