{"id":405328,"date":"2022-02-12T19:39:20","date_gmt":"2022-02-12T16:39:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/hr-block-software-made-voluntarily-contributions-to-ny-pols-source\/"},"modified":"2022-02-12T19:39:20","modified_gmt":"2022-02-12T16:39:20","slug":"hr-block-software-made-voluntarily-contributions-to-ny-pols-source","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/hr-block-software-made-voluntarily-contributions-to-ny-pols-source\/","title":{"rendered":"#H&#038;R Block software made &#8216;voluntarily contributions&#8217; to NY pols: source"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#H&amp;R Block software made &#8216;voluntarily contributions&#8217; to NY pols: source<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Doublecheck your New York state tax return, if you filed early with H&amp;R Block.<\/p>\n<p>The $4 billion firm\u2019s tax-prep software made \u201cvoluntarily contributions\u201d on behalf of unsuspecting taxpayers to a new state fund that donates to political campaigns, a tax expert told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>The expert, who requested anonymity, discovered the shocking error when finishing his sister-in-law\u2019s return, who as a state pensioner and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Social<\/a> Security recipient, doesn\u2019t pay New York taxes \u2014 yet still had a $40 balance owed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s got zero taxable income, how can she owe $40?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p>New York state allows taxpayers to make \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tax.ny.gov\/pit\/file\/voluntary_contributions.htm\">voluntary contributions<\/a>\u201d on their returns to dozens of causes, such as the 9\/11 memorial, the City University of New York, and the Olympic Training Center at Lake Placid.<\/p>\n<p>New this year is the Campaign Finance Fund, which under new provisions in state law will make matching contributions to eligible candidates for office. Yet the program carried over a $40 contribution\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Manually entering zero for the Campaign Finance Fund resolved the error, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Pollyanna in me would prefer to think it was a glitch,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that the error was fixed by the time he got to other friends\u2019 returns \u2014 after The Post reached out to H&amp;R Block. <\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t immediately clear how many taxpayers were affected. We took immediate action, stopping any additional taxpayers from being impacted. We are taking steps to resolve this issue for those who did not intend to make a contribution to the fund,\u201d a rep told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>Garrett Watson, a senior policy analyst at the Tax Foundation, said the practice of soliciting voluntary contributions \u201cdoes lead to mistakes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s definitely something folks should look out for in tax season,\u201d he said. \u201cSetting aside the question of whether this particular cause is worthy or not \u2026 why is it that this particular cause is on tax returns?\u201d <\/p>\n<p>In New York, 597,337 taxpayers used H&amp;R Block software to file tax returns last year, according to the state finance department.\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
