Today, we\u2019re watching a video essay that explores sound design in the films of Mia Hansen-L\u00f8ve.&lt;\/em&gt;\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<hr\/>\n<p>I have a very strong memory of booting up Milo\u0161 Forman\u2019s\u00a0<em>Amadeus<\/em> as a kid, only to realize that I\u2019d accidentally played the \u201csoundtrack only\u201d version of the film. Such a cut makes sense for a movie propelled by, and explicitly about, music. And I absolutely think other films should take advantage of this idea on their physical media releases (I for one would relish a version of 2018\u2019s\u00a0<em>Mandy\u00a0<\/em>that cut the dialogue and let J\u00f3hann J\u00f3hannsson\u2019s brooding final score speak for itself).<\/p>\n<p>But the video essay below unintentionally has me hankering for yet another cut-option; one that dulled dialogue and score in favor of foregrounding the aural landscape of sound design. Imagine it: a version of\u00a0<em>Alien\u00a0<\/em>backed only by electronic hums, acidic drips, and hissing pneumatics. Or what about a version of\u00a0<em>The Lord of the Rings\u00a0<\/em>trilogy that allowed all that imaginative, inventive sonic worldbuilding to come to the forefront? Like editing, \u201cgood\u201d (whatever that means) sound design should go unnoticed because if it\u2019s doing its job, it\u2019s immersive. Or at least, that\u2019s the idea (films\u00a0<em>about\u00a0<\/em>hearing like\u00a0<em>The Vast of Night\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Sound of Metal<\/em> are in a category of their own).<\/p>\n<p>But paying attention to sound design can tell you a lot about a director\u2019s filmography; how they flesh out their worlds, what sounds they tend to focus on, and recurring auditory <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">theme<\/a>s that pop up time and time again. The video essay below is a marvelous example of a \u201cpractice in hearing.\u201d It stitches together various sonic moments from across the films of French film director <strong>Mia Hansen-L\u00f8ve<\/strong>, whose recent film <strong><em>Bergman Island<\/em><\/strong> wowed us at TIFF. The result is a filmography populated with tactility, gentleness, and small moments of unobserved beauty.
