According to the fan-run Apple Wiki, Apple has released <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apple.fandom.com\/wiki\/List_of_Apple_product_names_that_start_with_%22i%22\">at least 23 products<\/a> using the lowercase \u201ci\u201d branding scheme in the past three decades.<\/p>\n<p>All of that branding originated in 1998 with the iMac, an <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.macworld.com\/article\/191974\/imacanniversary.html\">innovative personal computer<\/a> designed to be an easy on-ramp to the internet. (\u201cOnly Apple would dare to lowercase the \u201cI\u201d in Internet,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/steve-jobs-unveils-imac-169734\">wrote Steven Levy<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a>week in 1998, at a time when \u201cinternet\u201d was usually capitalized.)<\/p>\n<p>During the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/steve-jobs-unveils-imac-169734\">unveiling of the iMac<\/a> on May 6, 1998, Steve Jobs spent a few minutes talking about the iMac name: \u201ciMac comes from the marriage of the excitement of the internet with the simplicity of the Macintosh,\u201d said Jobs. \u201cEven though this is a full-blooded Macintosh, we are targeting this for the number one use that consumers tell us they want a computer for, which is to get on the internet\u2014simply and fast.\u201d<\/p>\n<lite-youtube videoid=\"0BHPtoTctDY\" style=\"background-image: url('https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/0BHPtoTctDY\/hqdefault.jpg');\">\n<button type=\"button\" class=\"lty-playbtn\"><br \/>\n<span class=\"lyt-visually-hidden\">Play Video<\/span><br \/>\n<\/button>\n<\/lite-youtube>\n<p>Although the world\u2019s use of the internet is commonplace today, providing a machine that could let you get on the Internet easily in 1998 was a very big deal. And we hope, as you see the product, it will inspire us all to make even better products in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So even though the \u201ci\u201d in \u201ciMac\u201d primarily meant \u201cinternet,\u201d Apple found a way to abstract the \u201ci\u201d naming scheme to mean just about anything you can imagine. After the iPod <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/0743285239\/?tag=hotoge-20\">conquered the world<\/a>, all eyes were on Apple: What would they do next?<\/p>\n<p>When the firm decided to work on a cell phone, many\u00a0potential names floated around. It made sense, and the iPhone became Apple\u2019s most successful product line yet.<\/p>\n<p>Thinking back to the nebulous nature of the \u201ci\u201d branding we mentioned above, if you ask Apple today what the \u201ci\u201d in \u201ciPhone\u201d stands for (which we did\u2014Apple declined to comment), you might not get a concrete answer. However, using the full internet on a phone was one of the iPhone\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/newsroom\/2007\/01\/09Apple-Reinvents-the-Phone-with-iPhone\/\">most distinguishing features<\/a> at launch in 2007, so the thought of \u201ciPhone\u201d meaning \u201cinternet Phone\u201d isn\u2019t too far off the mark.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, Segall <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/kensegall.com\/2018\/09\/26\/iphone-naming-1-step-forward-4-steps-back\/\">has criticized<\/a> confusing extensions of the iPhone name, such as iPhone SE and iPhone XR, but it\u2019s hard to deny the brand power of the iPhone, which is now a roughly <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/382260\/segments-share-revenue-of-apple\/\">$70 billion business<\/a> for Apple.
