When comedia<\/a>n Quinta Brunson began crafting her high-grade sitcom, Abbott Elementary<\/em>, about beleaguered educators at a low-funded Philadelphia public elementary school, creating a lesson plan wasn\u2019t a stretch.<\/p>\n

\u201cI definitely pulled from my mom\u2019s experiences as a teacher and her interactions with students,\u201d says Brunson, who writes, produces, and stars as plucky second-grade teacher Janine Teagues. \u201cI would check in with her and ask, \u2018Does this sound like something relatable to you?\u2019 And she\u2019d say, \u2018Oh<\/i> yeah!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

The freshman hit\u2019s February 15 episode looks at a different kind of family \u2014 the Abbott work clan, which includes tense sub Gregory (Tyler James Williams), saucy principal Ava (Janelle James), and Janine\u2019s fellow educators, even-keeled Barbara (Sheryl Lee Ralph), raucous Melissa (Lisa Ann Walter) and nervous Jacob (Chris Perfetti). The ever-enthusiastic Janine realizes she doesn\u2019t know nearly enough about her colleagues \u2014 and \u201cneeds to rectify the issue immediately,\u201d Brunson says with a laugh.<\/p>\n

Her solution: Enlist everybody in a lunchtime game<\/a> of trading personal-life details. The idea is met with scorn. (\u201cWe are<\/i> good colleagues\u2026and then we leave,\u201d explains Barbara.) However, \u201cthe game backfires on Janine\u201d when she mentions unflattering info on her relationship with selfish boyfriend Tariq (Zack Fox).<\/p>\n

That doesn\u2019t go unnoticed by Gregory, who has subtle crush-worthy sparks with the unavailable Janine. But while this series<\/a> shares The Office<\/i>\u2019s mockumentary style, don\u2019t expect Jim and Pam-type fireworks soon. \u201cWe want to explore this relationship,\u201d Brunson says, \u201cbut sometimes, all you\u2019re having is a crush.\u201d<\/p>\n

One thing is certain \u2014 it\u2019s more like love for those tuning in to the comedy (the pilot drew 7.1 million total viewers over its first 35 days). No one is more happ<\/a>ily surprised than Brunson. \u201cMost sitcoms have a slow buildup of fans,\u201d she says. \u201cI just wasn\u2019t expecting so much so soon.\u201d Talk about a great learning experience.<\/p>\n
