We\u2019re a month out from the (probable) release of\u00a0Tenet<\/em><\/strong>, and still no one could tell you what Christopher Nolan<\/strong>\u2018s time-bending new movie is about. Least of all his cast. Following the lead of a confused\u00a0Robert Pattinson,\u00a0Kenneth Branagh<\/strong> is here to cast uncertainty over his\u00a0Tenet<\/em> character. A mysterious figure with an intimidating Russian accent, Branagh\u2019s character in any other movie \u2014 especially one as inspired by the Bond movies<\/a> as this \u2014 would be the villain. But Branagh is not so sure that he\u2019s playing the bad guy.<\/p>\n

In an interview with Total Film (via\u00a0Syfy Wire), Branagh teased that the story of\u00a0Tenet<\/em> \u201cdoesn\u2019t quite follow what you might expect as the story plays out.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGiven the nature of it, as Chris to some extent sort of reinvents the wheel here, a lot of people start engaging with John David Washington\u2019s character in both expected ways\u2026so you might expect me to be an antagonist\u2026but then [the story] doesn\u2019t quite follow what you might expect as the story plays out,\u201d Branagh said.<\/p>\n

John David Washington<\/strong> plays the unnamed protagonist of\u00a0Tenet<\/em>, whose allies and enemies will app<\/a>arently change and shift throughout the movie, Branagh hinted. We\u2019ve mostly seen him interacting with Pattinson\u2019s character, while Branagh appears briefly in the shadows, sporting a thick Russian accent. With\u00a0Tenet<\/em> so heavily inspired by the Bond movies, those features would naturally cast Branagh as the villain, but the film\u2019s time-bending nature may upend those expectations, the actor said:<\/p>\n

\n\u201cIn the playing of it, and in the scenes, he keeps upturning, or playing forward and backward, our expectations of what the character should be. So my conversations with [Nolan] about my character were constant, because the character\u2019s evolution was not set. It was a series of constant surprises.\u201d\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Branagh seems to have a pretty solid handle on how his character factors into\u00a0Tenet<\/em>, but ask him anything else about the plot of the film and he\u2019s as confused as Pattinson was.<\/p>\n

\u201cI kid you not, I read this screenplay more times than I have ever read any other thing I have ever worked on,\u201d Branagh said. \u201cIt was like doing the Times crossword puzzle every day, I would imagine. Except the film and the screenplay didn\u2019t expect you, or need you, to be an expert.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tenet<\/em>\u00a0is still set for its July 17, 2020<\/strong> release date.<\/p>\n

Armed with only one word\u2014Tenet\u2014and fighting for the survival of the entire world, the Protagonist journeys through a twilight world of international espionage on a mission that will unfold in something beyond real time.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
