Find out how you can try it now.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Is_Chrome_OS_Flex\"><\/span>What Is Chrome OS Flex?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Chrome OS Flex is a version of Chrome OS designed for business and education settings. It is based on the software CloudReady, developed by Neverware, that <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/128575\/how-to-run-chrome-os-from-a-usb-drive-and-use-it-on-any-computer\/\">enabled Chrome OS to run on nearly any PC. You don\u2019t need a Chromebook to run it.<\/p>\n<p>The goal is to create a lightweight OS to replace Windows and macOS on older computers so they don\u2019t slow down with time \u2014 improving longevity and reducing e-waste.\u00a0 Chrome OS Flex leans heavily into cloud integration, just like Chrome OS, to help accomplish that. Besides being lightweight and cloud-first, Chrome OS Flex is designed to be secure \u2014 supporting UEFI Secure Boot \u2014\u00a0 and easy to manage using the Google Admin console.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Do_You_Need_to_Run_It\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_1\">What Do You Need to Run It?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Ideally, you should run Chrome OS Flex on one of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/chromeosflex\/answer\/11513094#acer&amp;advantech&amp;aopen&amp;apple&amp;asus&amp;dell&amp;elo&amp;hp&amp;intel&amp;ioxo&amp;justice&amp;lenovo&amp;lg&amp;microsoft&amp;minisforum&amp;panasonic&amp;toshiba&amp;zotac&amp;\">Google\u2019s certified devices<\/a>. However, the number of certified devices is currently limited. It will likely run on many devices that are not listed, but there are no guarantees about system stability or hardware drivers.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"admonishment_warning\"><p><strong>Warning:<\/strong> As of its release in February 2022, note that Chrome OS Flex is still experimental. However, you can try it straight from a USB drive without even installing it on your PC.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>At a minimum, you\u2019ll need a computer with at least following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A 64-bit Intel or AMD CPU<\/li>\n<li>Four gigabytes of RAM<\/li>\n<li>A 16 gigabyte USB drive<\/li>\n<li>Support for booting from USB<\/li>\n<li>Administrative access to the BIOS\/UEFI settings<\/li>\n<li>An internet connection<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote class=\"admonishment_note\"><p><strong>Note:<\/strong> Chrome OS Flex does not support ARM-based systems.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Try_Chrome_OS_Flex_Without_Installing_It\"><\/span>How to Try Chrome OS Flex Without Installing It<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Chrome OS Flex can be run on a USB drive without installing it to your PC\u2019s hard drive, much like a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/howto\/linux\/create-a-bootable-ubuntu-usb-flash-drive-the-easy-way\/\">live Linux USB drive. Once it has finished, click \u201cDone.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Booting_the_USB_Drive\"><\/span>Booting the USB Drive<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>You need to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/129815\/beginner-geek-how-to-change-the-boot-order-in-your-computers-bios\/\">change the boot order of your PC to try Chrome OS Flex.<\/p>\n<p>Google says that Chrome OS Flex should be compatible with UEFI Secure Boot, but it may be necessary to adjust your Secure Boot settings. For example, a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Microsoft-Surface-Laptop-13-5-Touch-Screen\/dp\/B08YWRWLYM?tag=hotoge-20\">Surface device<\/a> we tested required the Secure Boot certificate keyset to be changed from \u201cMicrosoft only\u201d to \u201cMicrosoft &amp; 3rd party CA\u201d in order for the Chrome OS Flex USB drive to boot.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Trying_Chrome_OS_Flex\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_5\">Trying Chrome OS Flex<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Chrome OS Flex is still experimental, and it may not fully support all of the hardware in your device. This may result in crashes or hardware that doesn\u2019t work. Follow the prompts after booting it to get started.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"admonishment_warning\"><p><strong>Warning:<\/strong> Be sure to select \u201cTry It First.\u201d Chrome OS Flex is still new and unlikely to be stable enough to use as your daily driver. Additionally, installing Chrome OS Flex will wipe the existing data on your hard drive. Logging in with your Google account automatically logs you in to all of the Google apps on the device, just like on a Chromebook.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Using_Chrome_OS_on_a_PC_Is_Like\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_6\">What Using Chrome OS on a PC Is Like<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019ve ever used Chrome OS on a Chromebook, you\u2019ll be right at home with Chrome OS Flex. Chrome OS Flex does not support Android Apps or the Google Play Store. Your familiar keyboard shortcuts from Chrome OS might also be different, since not every Chrome OS Flex keyboard will be the same.<\/p>\n<p>Chrome OS Flex\u2019s hardware support is also pretty good. Unfortunately, neither laptop we tested would respond to the trackpad or keyboard built into them. A USB mouse and keyboard attached to the devices worked, however. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and audio devices all worked perfectly on computers that had them.
