{"id":406831,"date":"2022-02-17T15:14:04","date_gmt":"2022-02-17T12:14:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/superfluids-provide-new-insight-into-turbulence\/"},"modified":"2022-02-17T15:14:04","modified_gmt":"2022-02-17T12:14:04","slug":"superfluids-provide-new-insight-into-turbulence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/superfluids-provide-new-insight-into-turbulence\/","title":{"rendered":"#Superfluids provide new insight into turbulence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Superfluids provide new insight into turbulence<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"article-gallery lightGallery\">\n<div data-thumb=\"https:\/\/scx1.b-cdn.net\/csz\/news\/tmb\/2022\/superfluids-provide-ne.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/scx2.b-cdn.net\/gfx\/news\/hires\/2022\/superfluids-provide-ne.jpg\" data-sub-html=\"Credit: University of Queensland\">\n<figure class=\"article-img\">\n            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/scx1.b-cdn.net\/csz\/news\/800a\/2022\/superfluids-provide-ne.jpg\" alt=\"Superfluids provide new insight into turbulence\" title=\"Credit: University of Queensland\" width=\"800\" height=\"500\"\/><figcaption class=\"text-darken text-low-up text-truncate-js text-truncate mt-3\">\n                Credit: University of Queensland<br \/>\n            <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Eddies in an exotic liquid known as a superfluid merge to form large vortices, analogous to how cyclones form in the turbulent atmosphere.<\/p>\n<section class=\"article-banner first-banner ads-336x280\">\n         <!-- \/4988204\/Phys_Story_InText_Box --><\/p>\n<\/section>\n<p>The new research, by a team from The University of Queensland, the ARC Centre of Excellence for Engineered Quantum Systems (EQUS) and the ARC Centre of Excellence in Future Low-Energy Electronics Technologies (FLEET) will be important for emerging technological <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>lications of superfluidity, such as precision sensing.<\/p>\n<p>Lead author and theorist Dr. Matt Reeves said the team&#8217;s results provide experimental validation of a 70-year-old theory\u2014a model for two-dimensional vortex equilibrium by Nobel Laureate Lars Onsager.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Large, long-lived vortices like cyclones or Jupiter&#8217;s Great Red Spot often form out of turbulent fluid flows, such as the atmospheres of planets,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Onsager&#8217;s model explains the existence of these structures, but so far experiments have tended to conflict with the predictions,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A key complication is that most fluids are viscous, meaning they resist flow.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Superfluids, which have no viscosity, are therefore ideal candidates to realize Onsager&#8217;s model.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Tyler Neely, who led the experiments, said the team studied the behavior of vortices in a superfluid known as a Bose\u2013Einstein condensate, which is produced by cooling a gas of rubidium atoms to extremely cold temperatures.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We created a thin disk of the superfluid and then used lasers to inject vortices at carefully specified locations,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The vortices mixed rapidly, merging into a single large cluster in only a few seconds, much like a large cyclone forming from the turbulent atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;However, the most exciting thing was the remarkable agreement between theory and experiment\u2014the theory predicted the shape of the final giant vortex structures in the superfluid exceptionally well.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our results suggest superfluids can be used to learn new things about turbulence, and will be crucial for the development of precision sensors based on superfluids.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This work answers some of the key outstanding questions from previous work by the team on vortex clusters, which was published in 2019 in <i><a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Science<\/a><\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>The new research is published in <i>Physical Review X<\/i>.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<div class=\"article-main__explore my-4 d-print-none\">\n<p>                                            Engineering researchers develop new explanation for formation of vortices in 2D superfluid\n                                        <\/p><\/div>\n<hr class=\"mb-4\"\/>\n<div class=\"article-main__more p-4\">\n                                                                                                <strong>More information:<\/strong><br \/>\n                                                Matthew T.
