    &lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;Recent research shows that decentralized exchanges that distribute tokens via airdrops see a big boost in user numbers and transactions. But, is building communities this way just cryptos version of printing money?&lt;\/b&gt;\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<p>Airdrops  the disbursal of free tokens to early users as a way of rewarding and building momentum  have been around for years but came to<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptopotato.com\/uniswaps-2020-uni-airdrop-now-worth-12000\/\"> prominence<\/a> thanks to Uniswaps retroactive largesse in 2020. Nearly anyone whod used the exchange before a certain date was gifted 400 UNI tokens and those who held their tokens saw a substantial increase.<\/p>\n<p>But, as the market became more mature and more people entered the space, the use cases for airdrops have become more complex. For example, LooksRare more recently sought to siphon off some of OpenSeas user base by airdropping tokens to new users but with two key rules: They had to have bought or sold a minimum of 3 ETH of NFTs on OpenSea and would need to contribute a new NFT to the LooksRare marketplace.<\/p>\n<p>There have also been notable bad airdrop examples, ranging from a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theblockcrypto.com\/post\/130350\/a-look-at-the-fees-wtf-airdrop-and-what-went-wrong\">lack<\/a> of liquidity for Fees.wtf to phishing expeditions whereby recipients of the airdrop are <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.coinbase.com\/security-psa-airdrop-phishing-campaign-38b880c0298a\">baited<\/a> into connecting their wallets to a malicious site.<\/p>\n<p>The question for builders is: Are airdrops effective tools for galvanizing new users and building communities?<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Building_a_community\"><\/span>Building a community<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Unless youre an already established exchange or NFT project, attracting new users is very difficult and handing out free tokens is one way to do it. In the DeFi and DAO space, tokens often come with governance rights that confer the authority to vote on the protocols development so airdrops can create both value and skin in the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But, how do you avoid devaluing the token and attracting a large group of freeloaders with no interest in contributing apart from receiving the airdrop?<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11021\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11021\" style=\"width: 212px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-11021\" src=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/gary-book.jpg\" alt=\"Gary Vaynerchuk\" width=\"212\" height=\"320\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11021\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Airdrops can be a very successful marketing strategy.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>If you do it right, instead of just attracting attention, airdrops can be an effective vehicle for building community. They can reward loyal users and generate buzz and momentum in the market. Many exchanges are simply looking for relevance and traction in decentralized communities. Having something to talk about is a way to stay relevant and build value for the audience.<\/p>\n<p>Thats what Gary Vaynerchuk, chair of VaynerX and creator of VeeFriends, did in 2021 when he <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/gary-vaynerchuk-promised-fans-an-nft-they-ordered-one-million-books-as-a-result-11636984800\">announced <\/a>that every customer who bought 12 print copies of his new leadership book about <span class=\"a-text-bold\">twelve essential emotional skills that are integral to his life <\/span>would also receive one mystery NFT through an airdrop to their digital wallets. While the book was interesting on its own, the novelty of a mystery NFT coupled with the success and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>reciation of his even earlier VeeFriends NFTscreated a significant splash and demand.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, Vaynerchuk <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/gary-vaynerchuk-promised-fans-an-nft-they-ordered-one-million-books-as-a-result-11636984800\">received <\/a>over a million pre-orders of the book within a 24-hour period.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Airdrops_and_scams\"><\/span>Airdrops and scams<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Are there scams with airdrops? Scams are inevitable, especially with new technologies and markets where it is harder for new users to cut through the noise.<\/p>\n<p>That means that the more important question is not whether all airdrops are scams, but rather how to work out which airdrops come from meaningful and high-impact projects. Especially for public-facing personalities, like Vaynerchuk, who make their business around legacy and reputation, even a whiff of a scam  or simply failing to deliver value  has While time will tell whether these patterns continue, the data supports the strategic use of airdrops.<\/p>\n<p>Further, these results likely underestimate the value of airdrops given that they create more value than just the price associated with the corresponding digital asset.
