\n \u201cThe Ren & Stimpy Show\u201d is returning with all-new episodes \u2014 25 years after ending its original run.<\/p>\n

Comedy Central has ordered an updated version of the wildly anarchic, dark-humored and trip<\/a>py adult animated series<\/a> that aired on Nickelodeon and MTV from 1991-96 and followed the surreal shenanigans of temperamental\/psychotic Chihuahua Ren and his goofy, dim-bulb cat pal Stimpy. (Their proper names are Ren Hoeck and Stimpson J. Cat.) It also spawned the show\u2019s unofficial theme<\/a> song \u201cHappy Happy Joy Joy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Billy West, the voice of Stimpy \u2014 and of Ren (for three seasons) \u2014 is expected to return to the revival, along with several of the original writers. Scandal-plagued series creator Jon Kricfalusi, the subject of a new documentary hitting streaming services\u00a0Aug. 14, will not be involved.<\/p>\n

The original cartoon series aired for five seasons and developed a loyal cult audience, with celebrities including Frank Zappa, Soleil Moon Frye, Mark Hamill and Phil Hartman playing incidental characters.<\/p>\n

\u201cRen & Stimpy\u201d will join the new version of \u201cBeavis and Butt-Head\u201d and the \u201cDaria\u201d spinoff, \u201cJodie,\u201d on Comedy Central within the next year-and-a-half as the network ramps up its slate of animated revivals.<\/p>\n

Comedy Central is already home to the groundbreaking animated series \u201cSouth Park,\u201d now in its 23rd season. It\u2019s been renewed through its 26th season, airs worldwide in over 130 countries in 30 different languages and has enjoyed multi-platform success. It was the top animated series on Hulu and now streams exclusively on HBO Max.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, a revival of the cult animated series \u201cClone High\u201d (2002-03) will return to sister network MTV with original series creators Phil Lord, Chris Miller and Bill Lawrence.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re not making the same shows,\u201d says Chris McCarthy, president, Entertainment & Youth Group, ViacomCBS. \u201cThe world has changed so much. To me they\u2019re not remakes but re-imaginings. \u2018Beavis and Butt-Head,\u2019 for instance, was so defined by GenXers, my generation, who are now having kids and raising GenZers.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd that\u2019s where we\u2019ll find Beavis and Butt-Head \u2014 each with a kid about to enter high school.\u201d<\/p>\n

This animation push is part-and-parcel of the ratings success enjoyed by corporate parent ViacomCBS, whose portfolio includes Paramount Network (and its hit cable series \u201cYellowstone,\u201d starring Kevin Costner) and Pop TV, which found its breakout series in the Emmy-nominated comedy \u201cSchitt\u2019s Creek,\u201d which ended its six-season run in April.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re really making a dramatic shift on Comedy Central, where \u2018South Park\u2019 is killing it,\u201d McCarthy says. \u201cThe nice thing about animation is it helps you take the hard truth of life and process these through funny jokes \u2014 even when they\u2019re not funny.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a visual manifestation of pure insanity\u2026 and the rise of adult animation is skyrocketing.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
