They\u2019ve heard it all. But besides being a sounding board for all the darkest secrets and worries from your personal life, they also hear a fair amount of work-related grievances.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich one would you like?\u201d said <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/resiliencecoachllc.com\/\">Laurie L. Smith, LMSW,<\/a> author of \u201cLife Hacks: Tips and Tricks for Accessing Your Inner Resilience\u201d (independently published), who continued: \u201cCompassion fatigue, moral injury, institutional betrayal, burnout, imposter syndrome, exhaustion, complex trauma, the breakdown of self as we exhaust ourselves to the edge of our lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, these maladies are only compounded by the current state of things.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIndividuals have been forced to adapt to remote work while exacerbating or creating other challenges such as at-home relationships with significant others and parenting stress,\u201d said Aaron <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.familyaddictionspecialist.com\/\">Sternlicht, LMHC, a co-founder of New York City practice Family Addiction Specialist.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>How do we resolve these issues? Below, therapists chime in on how to address the most common complaints <\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Bored_and_overworked\"><\/span>Bored and overworked <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Can\u2019t stand another shift tending the bar? Delivering packages? SAT tutoring? <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/rejuvenatedmindstherapy.com\">Shawnessa Devonish, LCPC, <\/a>who is based in the Washington, DC, area, sees this specifically in people who rely on hourly wages. \u201cDue to the lack of job stability, this population also experiences anxiety that may also trigger physiological responses,\u201d like headaches and sickness, said Devonish.<\/p>\n<p><em>The fix: <\/em>Know yourself better to help you determine the best next move.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s important to work on identifying a job position that provides more fulfillment,\u201d said Devonish. \u201cTake a job assessment, such as <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/openpsychometrics.org\/tests\/RIASEC\/\">the Holland Code RIASEC Test<\/a>, to discover their career interests,\u201d she added. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/JobSecurity.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"Upset young caucasian beautiful businesswoman tired\" class=\"wp-image-21267989\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/JobSecurity.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/JobSecurity.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/JobSecurity.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Clinical Professional Counselor Shawnessa Devonish says job insecurity can lead to anxiety.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Shutterstock<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Books like \u201cCareer Solutions for Creative People: How to Balance Artistic Goals With Career Security\u201d (Allworth Press), <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.parachutebook.com\/\">\u201cWhat Color Is Your Parachute?\u201d<\/a> (Ten Speed Press) and \u201cI Don\u2019t Know What I Want, But I Know It\u2019s Not This\u201d (Penguin Books) may also be helpful.<\/p>\n<p>If you think your current gig is salvageable with some tweaks, consider this advice from <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/bayareacbtcenter.com\/\">Avigail Lev, PsyD, an author and the director of Bay Area CBT Center<\/a>: \u201cBe transparent and honest about what you need and ask for it directly. Make very specific requests that are clear and direct,\u201d she said, adding that you shouldn\u2019t be afraid to share your values and needs with your boss or manager. \u201cIf you want to take more of a leadership role, learn the steps of how to get a promotion. Express yourself, assert yourself, and negotiate until you get what you want. Take an active role in shaping your job position.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Feeling_unfulfilled\"><\/span>Feeling unfulfilled <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>This is the most common refrain heard in Smith\u2019s practice, and similar to the ennui discussed above with a fun existential twist thrown into the mix. \u201cClients often feel that they just need to do more, or that they aren\u2019t being productive enough,\u201d she said. \u201cThis can turn into self-blame and boundaries slipping to get the job done. Is there a way I can excel at those things in this job? If not, what steps can I take to improve my own sense of well-being? Is there a way I can do what I love in other jobs? Do I want to consider that? Why or why not? What is my return on investment emotionally at this job? Is that enough for me? Where would I like to be in three months?<\/p>\n<p>These questions, Smith explains, will help you clarify what is and isn\u2019t important to you and what steps you may want to take to recalibrate. She added, \u201cWe only have one [life]. We have a birthright to our own joy.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Work_spilling_over\"><\/span>Work spilling over <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Remember when you had to be on a work computer to check your company e-mail? Some may find it helpful to have a daily \u201cpower down\u201d ritual that formalizes stepping away from your home office setup, such as a quick meditation or taking a walk around your block.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_brutal_commute\"><\/span>A brutal commute <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Therapists hear patients gripe about straphanging more than you would think. \u201cThey say people don\u2019t hate their jobs, they hate their commute,\u201d said Sternlicht. \u201cAlthough many are working remotely, for those who commute it can be an added stress and cause them to have less time for themselves or to spend with family.\u201d <\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p><em>The fix:<\/em> Sternlicht helps his clients with developing ways to utilize a commute so that their time at work or home can be used more productively and efficiently. Multitask by ordering groceries on Instacart or drafting client e-mails on-the-go while simultaneously checking out perspective-shifting podcasts like \u201cHidden Brain,\u201d \u201cThis American Life,\u201d or \u201cPlanet Money.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Exhaustion\"><\/span>Exhaustion <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In this era of endless distraction, hitting the hay isn\u2019t always easy. \u201cI frequently see clients who do not have a healthy sleep routine, prioritizing their work or Netflix over sleep,\u201d said Sternlicht. \u201cLack of sleep results in less efficiency as well as poor concentration and focus at work, which adds to stress, and can also contribute to mental health issues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For remote workers, the transformation of our homes into workspaces hasn\u2019t helped things as we come to associate \u201chome\u2019\u2019 with stress instead of with relaxation, Sternlicht added.<\/p>\n<p><em>The fix:<\/em> \u201cI always encourage individuals to work in a separate part of their home than where they spend time to relax or sleep to help reduce the correlation between their home and work-related stress,\u201d said Sternlicht. Beyond that obvious remedy, try sprucing up your workspace \u2014 even if it\u2019s just a sliver of the dining room table or a small closet \u2014 so it\u2019s more zen, with greenery, nice lighting, an essential oil diffuser and other calming accouterments.\n                        <\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
