My stepchildren are obviously American. My nephew lived in America, worked in America,\u201d she <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/movies\/helen-mirren-had-epiphany-after-911-that-led-her-to-us-citizenship-exclusive\/\">told People<\/a> in a revealing new profile. \u201cSo I had certainly been an American resident for a very long time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The outspoken Dame went on to recount that she was in New York City during the 9\/11 devastation, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ibdb.com\/broadway-production\/dance-of-death-12939#OpeningNightCast\">rehearsing the Broadway play \u201cDance of Death\u201d<\/a> with fellow Brit Ian McKellen at the time. That\u2019s the perfect world.\u2019 \u201c<\/p>\n<p>Mirren noted that it was \u201cso moving\u201d when she finally received her American citizenship. \u201cI didn\u2019t realize how profound a feeling it would be,\u201d she explained. \u201cIt brought up feelings of patriotism that I didn\u2019t think I had. Mirren is not of Jewish descent and discussed the criticism with the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/tvshowbiz\/article-10478289\/Dame-Helen-Mirren-breaks-silence-film-race-row-exclusively-Daily-Mail.html\">Daily Mail<\/a>\u00a0earlier this month that the ethnicity question was brought up during casting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was certainly a question that I had, before I accepted the role,\u201d Mirren said, adding that she spoke with \u201cGolda\u201d director Guy Nattiv about the issue and said she would step back from the film if needed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do believe it is a discussion that has to be had \u2013 it\u2019s utterly legitimate.
