In 2019, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.media.renaultgroup.com\/assets\/groupe-renault-introduces-hydrogen-into-its-light-commercial-vehicles-range-5b2a-989c5.html?lang=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the company announced plans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to add hydrogen to two of its light electric commercial vehicles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just a refresher: FCEVs operate with a fuel cell, which combines hydrogen from their tanks with oxygen from the air to produce electricity (to power an electric motor). The Renault Kangoo ZE Hydrogen and Renault Master Z.E. Hydrogen use hydrogen for extended range, not as the sole source of battery power.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the company, the hydrogen fuel cell provides additional energy for up to three times more range than 100% electric vehicles, with a charging time of only five to 10 minutes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its target market is specifically business fleets, especially those already in possession of a hydrogen fueling station or those who drive a regular route which includes access to a suitable refill station.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Can_hydrogen_fuel_cells_catch_up_to_EV_innovation\"><\/span><strong>Can hydrogen fuel cells catch up to EV innovation?\u00a0<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last year, Jos\u00e9 Mu\u00f1oz, chief operating officer for Hyundai, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">commented<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that hydrogen <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> is about where battery vehicles were in the early 2010s.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The company predicts that its fuel cells will reach cost parity with electric vehicle batteries by 2030. Geez, that\u2019s a lot of catching up to do.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite that, Hyundai aims to become the first automaker to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ly fuel cell systems to all commercial vehicle models by 2028.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the biggest barriers to commercializing hydrogen has been the lack of sustainable <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">green steel<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">green hydrogen<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For reference, all of France has less than 20 public charging stations in operation.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By comparison, there are over <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.electromaps.com\/en\/charging-stations\/france\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">30,000 EV charging stations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> across the country. It makes the idea of extended range seem rather irrelevant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And what\u2019s more, you can\u2019t refuel a hydrogen car at home at night.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"But_France_is_investing_big\"><\/span><strong>But France is investing big\u00a0<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortunately, Renault is putting even more effort behind its hydrogen-powered ambitions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2021, the company <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hyvia.eu\/app\/uploads\/2022\/01\/CP-EN-3-06-21.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a partnership with <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.plugpower.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plug Power<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on an enterprise called <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hyvia.eu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HYVIA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It focuses on vehicle R&amp;D and refueling stations. Plug Power has deployed over 40,000 fuel cell systems and designed and built 110 refueling stations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After less than six months of existence, the HYVIA has unveiled three <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hydrogen light commercial vehicles: a van, a chassis cab, and a city bus. The vehicles will be available in 2022 with green hydrogen production and distribution solutions. Since their 2015 founding, they\u2019ve already transported over a million passengers in France.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The company plans to deploy 10,000 Hype taxis and 20 stations powered by locally produced green hydrogen in the Paris region, and expand to 15 additional cities by late 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Can_good_intentions_translate_to_commercial_success\"><\/span><strong>Can good intentions translate to commercial success?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, when we talk about hydrogen, we\u2019re never short of plans or good intentions. It\u2019s putting these into practice that is taking a long time \u2013 and a lot of money.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, if we look at the auto industry delays of the last two years, FCEVs have A LOT of catching up to do. I want them to catch up. I want ALL of the alternative energy sources to succeed \u2014 electric, hydrogen, solar, and whatever comes next.
