\n The NYPD is asking for volunteers from its civilian staff to enforce the state\u2019s quarantine order for travel<\/a>ers, The Post has learned.<\/p>\n

A memo sent out to NYPD members less than an hour before Mayor Bill de Blasio announced he was setting up checkpoints to enter New York City, said the off-duty \u201cvolunteers will be assigned to Penn Station or Port Authority Bus Terminal.\u201d<\/p>\n

The civilian members of the NYPD who volunteer will be charged with collecting forms from out-of-state travelers and \u201creminding\u201d them of the mandatory 14-day self-quarantine.<\/p>\n

The NYPD\u2019s civilian staff, which totals just shy of 20,000, was hit hard by the coronavirus when it swept through the department, killing more than three dozen.<\/p>\n

De Blasio announced the crackdown, with hefty fines for those who violate, Wednesday morning alongside New York City Sheriff Joseph Fucito, whose agency is taking the lead in enforcement.<\/p>\n

The Port Authority Police Department, which patrols the bus terminal and Penn Station \u2014 along with several bridges and tunnels \u2014 did not say what role it would serve, if any, in the new policy.<\/p>\n

A Port Authority spokeswoman referred reporters to the city for comment.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s an all hands on deck mission to hold the line and keep transmission low,\u201d a City Hall spokesman said. \u201cWe\u2019re leveraging every possible resource at our disposal to maximize our tracing efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n
